Sexual Assault Awareness Month: 6 Questions to Never Ask a Survivor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Rape is a horrible crime as well as a felony in every state. However, less than half of all rape crimes are actually reported to police. Victim-blaming, slut-shaming, and rape culture may all play a role in this surprising statistic. We protest any mentality that trivializes, normalizes, or jokes about rape, or that in any way attacks the victim. Not saying “no” does not equal consent. The rapist is always to blame, and society can do more to better support the survivors of this crime. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and campaigns like #RedMyLips, which encourages social media users to share pictures of themselves in red lipstick, help spread awareness and solidarity for victims of sexual assault.

Here are six questions to never ask a rape survivor.

1.     What were you wearing?

2.     Were you asking for it?

3.     Don’t you know boys will be boys?

4.     Did you flirt with your attacker?

5.     Have you had sex with him before?

6.     Well, you were both pretty drunk…

It’s important to remember to teach our children to “not rape” instead of “dont get raped.”
