Fall quarter is here and we can hardly believe it. It seems like it was only yesterday we were hanging out by the pool, hiking across beaches, and staying up late watching Netflix. We are now back in Davis getting ready for the upcoming quarter and bearing the late summer heat. So much has happened in the past few months, it is almost impossible to remember everything. Here are a few events that broke the internet this summer.
Stranger Things
This Netflix show seems to be the only TV show everyone has been binge-watching and talking about. Stranger Things has taken the internet by storm. It has even caused some people to freak out whenever they see flickering lights. It is definitely a show to check out if you are into â80s Sci-Fi.
Rio Olympics
The Summer Olympics only happens every four years, so the Rio Olympics was on everyoneâs minds. Although the Brazilian government was not in good shape and the Olympic Village was not up to the athletesâ standards, there were some positive moments for the USA. From Michael Phelps winning five gold medals in his last Olympic games to the Final Five (most notably Simone Biles) wowing the world with their incredible gymnastic skills. These Olympians definitely made America proud.
Ryan Lochte
How can we not mention Ryan Lochte after talking about the Rio Olympics? Lochte was no doubt the talk of the nation – as well as the world. After reporting that he and a few other Olympic swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi, evidence revealed that what Lochte described did not actually happen. Many Americans are angry over this, and a few even tried attacking him on a live taping of Dancing with the Stars.
#KimExposedTaylorParty
Kim Kardashian indeed broke the internet when she posted a video of her husband, Kanye West, talking to Taylor Swift on the phone about his song Famous. Not only did Taylor Swift refute this, but her bestie Selena Gomez also tried defending her. Unfortunately, people on Twitter dragged Gomez down along with Swift and started the #Selenagomezisoverparty.
Pokémon GO
PokĂ©mon GO took a only a day to achieve what Michelle Obama has been struggling to achieve for eight years: to get children to go outside. This game not only attracted children, but also teenagers and parents. Whenever you walked by someone holding their phone, you couldnât help but wonder if they were playing PokĂ©mon GO.
Colin Kaepernick
Whether you agree or disagree, you canât ignore the movement the 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, has created simply by sitting down or taking a knee during the national anthem. After explaining his intention of supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, his actions stormed up a huge debate across the nation. He led the way for other athletes – from high schoolers to professionals – to follow him and express their own views on the matter.
And that is your quick Summer 2016 Recap.
