Many of us resort to watching television or movies when we’re stressed. Let’s face it, it feels good to get lost in fictional characters’ troubles and forget about our own. However, this method of stress relief can also backfire if we pick the wrong thing to watch, making us even more agitated. That’s why it’s important to watch documentaries, comedies, or sitcoms when we want to unwind. Unlike reality TV or crime shows, intellectually stimulating or light-humored content can have a positive impact on our emotions. Here is a list of shows and documentaries to consider. They’re all available on Netflix!

1. Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt

It’s funny AND educational! You can learn about female empowerment and laugh at all the ridiculous gender stereotypes.

2. Blackfish

This documentary is eye-opening, but not depressing. Uncover the truth about killer whales in captivity. Is Sea World as great as we think it is?

3. That 70’s Show

Travel back in time to the 70’s, where Eric Forman and his five best friends sit around in the basement, listen to rock music, and talk about their relationship problems. See? You’re not the only one who’s just hanging out.

4. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

You don’t have to study abroad to learn about different foods and cultures. Follow Chef Anthony Bourdain as he travels to places like Myanmar, Columbia, and Quebec to sample the most extraordinary cuisine.

5. Malcolm in the Middle

Once you see how Malcolm contends with his dysfunctional family and the hardships of adolescence, you’ll feel very relieved that you’re in college!

6. Ted Talks: Life Hack

This series offers some amazing advice on how to manage your hectic life. There are only ten episodes, so the series won’t take up too much of your time.

7. School of Rock

A struggling musician gets a job as a substitute teacher and turns a fourth grade class into a rock and roll band. If only college could be this fun.

8. Miss Representation

From firsthand experience, we know that women aren’t always portrayed as powerful human beings. Learn how the media is contributing to this, and how everyone can work together to promote gender equality.

9. The Office

This show is silly and enjoyable. Best of all, Michael Scott and his employees teach us how to make the best out of stressful and boring situations.

10. Ted Talks: Animal Voices

Humans are the only species that are capable of communicating. In this edition of Ted Talks, experts help us understand how animals think, and how humans can contribute to their mental well-being.

11. Broad City

No matter how bad your day is, Abbi’s is probably going worse. Check out this very relatable comedy show about two girls living in New York.
