What Your Facebook Status Says about You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

We often try to define our behavior and personality using anything that might indicate something about who we really are. Whether it’s through observing more serious qualities like religious views, political affiliation, or leisure interests, or giving value to arguably nonsensical things like astrological signs, preferred television shows, or favorite colors, evaluating ourselves and others is a part of our everyday lives as social beings. So here’s yet another guide to describe ourselves, as well as fellow college friends and foes, this time judging through our favorite medium: Facebook

1: Those that vent
Everyone has those days. While some take their frustrations out on loved ones, engage in musical therapy, or hit the gym to blow off steam, others simply speak their mind through Facebook. If you’re a Facebook venter, you’re one to let your feelings flow but not at the expense of someone else’s time. Consider yourself considerate, bold, and opinionated.

Real life example: “SERIOUSLY, STOP F’ING KISSING IN THE LIBRARY!!”

2: Play-by-plays
Those guilty of the play-by-play statuses (you know who you are) have the tendency to update their status up to several times a day about their current activities. Some may find your constant updates annoying or unnecessary, but take these opinions in stride; you’re a social gal with a busy schedule, and you’re just trying to let friends and family know what you’re up to.

Real life example: “Nails done, layin by the pool with the besties, then happy hour tonight!”

3: Quotes
Sometimes someone else just says it better. If you’re an avid quote user, don’t discount your own creativity, but rather realize that you’re attentive to what others have to say. Whether you share the wise words of authors, poets, or celebrities, you’re a thoughtful mind, and an honest one, giving credit where it belongs.

Real life example: “‘A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.’ – Coco Chanel”

4: Entertainment
Perhaps the most appreciated Facebook status is the one that makes us laugh. Juggling class, midterms, work, and the unmissable Wednesday funk night at G Street can be demanding and stressful, and a little laugh can be the perfect pause. If you’re an entertainer, you’re the “life of the party” type that adds laughter and wit to any group you choose to roll with.

Real life example: “Kindergarten quote of the day: Small Boy: ‘Coach Sierra, when we play walking club, is that like exercise?’ Me: ‘Yup. That’s like all exercise the whole time.’ Small Boy: ‘Oh. My mom should do walking club. She needs lots of exercise because she has a big fat belly.’”

5: Informative
Facebook is undoubtedly an event forum for many of us. If you find yourself constantly publicizing events via your status, you’re somewhat of a party planner and definitely someone who gets the word out about social haps. Your friends look to you for upcoming events, and they find your enthusiasm engaging.

Real life example: “Everybody come out to Manor West this Friday! Make the ‘journey’ from Davis, it is beyond worth it and I promise that Preacher and Froggy’s will still be there Saturday night welcoming you with open arms J”

6: Excitement
Every so often, it becomes nearly impossible for us to contain our excitement. It may be that your boyfriend is visiting, you’re going to Cabo to get your tan on for summer, or you simply cannot begin your countdown to houseboats soon enough. Either way, you want to share your excitement to the Facebook world. You look to the future and always have a handle on what’s ahead of you, allowing you to be on top of your game at all times.

Real life example: “At the end of this 18 unit quarter, there’s Vega$ & Tahoe cabin trip waiting for me. YES.”

7: Accomplishment
It’s not every day you land the internship you want, break a sales record at work, or finally guzzle a triple beer bong with ease at a party on a Saturday night. You’re proud of your achievements, and you definitely deserve credit for hard-earned success. Make some attempt to maintain modesty, but don’t be afraid to pat yourself on the back.

Real life example: “Bought a nonstick pan. Now cooking chicken without any pan scrubbing cleanup duty, like a boss. This was my big victory for the day.”

8: Random Thoughts
Everyone has them, but not everyone is willing to share them. If you’re quick to do so, you’re a wild card, continually bringing curiosity to the table and unafraid to speak your mind. You rarely hesitate to challenge ideas or thoughts that stretch your mind, and you make others think too.

Real life example: “I wish I had a remote locator for my debit card.”

9: No Status
Facebookers who don’t use statuses require a little bit deeper examination. You’re more sophisticated than you feel you can describe with a simple phrase or sentence; your complexity signifies great intellect. You also highly value your close relationships and figure if someone wants or needs to know something about you, you’ll tell them personally.
