Wheezers Unite: The Struggles of Having Asthma

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

My experience with asthma has been a rollercoaster my entire life: I had severe asthma when I was a baby, it seemed to go away for a bit in elementary school, but then it came back, stronger than ever (like Voldemort). As such, I think I know a little about #asthmaproblems, and it’s time for the world to know. If you have asthma, most of these will probably be familiar to you.

1. Laughing so hard you literally cannot breathe

No, really, if you don’t grab my inhaler I will DIE.

2. All your friends asking to try your inhaler for fun

You’re wasting precious puffs!!

3. Your pre-workout routine consists of breathing exercises and taking hits from your inhaler

(and praying)

4. What you wanted to say when your P.E. teacher made you run laps

pls

5. And then being seen as a whiny and dramatic when you mention you can’t breathe

I’ll just go in the corner and pass out quietly.

6. Forgetting to use your inhaler before or during a workout, and tasting blood in your throat

I did this to myself.

7. Knowing you’ll look like this whether you remembered to use it or not

Let’s not kid ourselves.

8. Sleeping slightly propped up at night so you don’t suffocate

What is lying down?

9. Asthma at night just in general

Why is it always so much worse at night??

10. Accepting your asthma and the fact that you’ll forever be suffocating

It is what it is.
