Why Rats Are the Best Pets You Can Have

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

When most people hear the word “rat”, the first image the comes to mind is either the bubonic plague or city sewers. Contrary to this stigma, rats are actually very clean, personal pets. Here are some reasons why you should make a rat your new best friend.

They come in a variety of floofy breeds.

Curly rex rats, colorful hooded rats, Siamese rats— you name it. They can be a lot cuter than the typical street rat.

They’re clean and docile.

Despite the dirty rat stereotype, rats happen to be extremely clean. They’ll groom themselves (and each other) all day long. Not only are rats clean, but they’re nice. Rats prefer giving kisses over bites any day.

They can learn cool tricks.

Rats are one of the smartest animals. They can learn how to spin on command, untie your shoelace, and can even be potty trained.

They recognize you.

My rat loves to greet me as soon as I come home. She also prefers me over just about anyone, which is always a good feeling.

They’re easy maintenance.

Aside from the occasional vet visit, your task in ensuring your pet’s well being is minimal. All you need to do is clean their cage on a weekly basis, feed them, and provide water at all times.

They’re surprisingly cuddly.

Rats might be tiny, but they know how to snuggle. Just prop them on your shoulders and they’ll sit with you for hours.
