13 Reasons Why ’13 Reasons Why’ is Trending

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

As we all know, 13 Reasons Why is the newest popular Netflix Original show. First and foremost, this show is not for the light-hearted. It is a teenage drama laced with darkness that many cannot avoid in their teenage years. The show came out on March 31st, and since then, Twitter has blown up with tweets (both good and bad), articles have been written by multiple companies, and young people talk about this new show that focuses on the suicide of a teenage girl – and all that comes afterwards. Regardless of what people think about the show, there is no doubt that it has definitely influenced individuals in one way or another. Here are 13 reasons why I believe 13 Reasons Why is such a hot topic right now:

1. It is aimed at a young audience.

The characters in the show are all in high school, and typically, most social media users are teenagers.

2. Selena Gomez played a role behind the scenes.

Selena Gomez reportedly got matching tattoos with some of the cast members from the show to show her support for the work that they put into making the show as successful as it is – and to spread awareness.

3. Many parts of the show are similar to real-life scenarios.

Everyone goes through high school. Been there, done that, and we’re so glad we never have to go back. While some of the scenes in the show are not commonly experienced by the average high schooler, being bullied is a part of every high schooler’s life. And if you’re not being bullied, then you’re probably the one doing the bullying.

4. The whole concept of the tapes is intriguing.

When I first started watching this show, I was absolutely unaware of what to expect. The concept of Hannah leaving tapes behind to document why she committed suicide has a very eery feeling to it – there’s no other show I can think to compare it to.

5. The CLIFFHANGERS.

Nearly every episode leaves off on some sort of cliffhanger. These always leave people wanting more.

6. The characters are easy to love – and to hate.

Not giving away any spoilers, but some of the characters were just straight horrible (cough, Bryce, cough.)

7. There is a mysterious element.

What did Clay do? Why didn’t Hannah’s mom do anything? Why is the guidance counselor so weird? I NEED ANSWERS.

8. WHEN IS CLAY’S TAPE?

This is easily one of the most-discussed topics throughout the show (also, SPOILER: the answer is episode 11.)

9. The drama escalates with every episode.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, it does.

10. Hannah’s journey is heartbreaking.

It’s easy to sympathize with someone’s experiences when they’re so raw. Some of the scenes are so intense that it’s hard to look, but it’s also hard to look away.

11. It opens peoples’ eyes.

I don’t know about you, but watching this show definitely made me reflect back on myself in high school. There are definitely moments I’m not proud of, and I think this show makes a point of showing people that their actions do have consequences.

12. It tackles a sensitive topic.

Suicide is never easily discussed, but 13 Reasons Why revolves around the idea of teenage suicide, and makes it into something that can be eye-opening to a large audience.

13. The end leaves you with many questions.

You’re just gonna have to finish the show to find out what I mean!

Genesis Vesco is a girl of many words - as shown through her articles. She is currently a student at the University of Central Florida, where she is studying both Journalism and Political Science. In her downtime, Genesis loves to hit the gym, cook up some new, healthy recipes, and spend time with those she holds close to her heart. As a literary fanatic, she has always loved to read and write, and HerCampus gives her a platform to do both of those things. She pours her heart and soul into every piece she writes - and hopefully it shows!
