5 Reasons We Got Lucky To Graduate High School Already

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

1. Partying is no longer just hanging out with friends

If you have any younger siblings or friends you can see that partying to them no longer means hanging out at the movies or having pool parties. Now most parties have themes, kind of like sorority social themes, except sluttier. For example some sophomores and beyond are even attending Lingerie themed parties where guys are shirtless in boxers and girls are trying to mimic Victoria’s Secret models.

2. Drinking is no longer foreign

High school students are basically going into their freshman year already knowing how to make a sex on the beach drink or how to shotgun a beer. They’re not trying to experiment with alcohol because for most of them that is what eighth grade was for. High school parties do not include sneaking in vodka somehow to a party because most often they have a full bar stocked by someone with a fake id these days. Funny to think that they will never understand what it is like to go crazy your freshman year of college since they have already experienced that their freshman year of high school.

3. Colleges will be looking into their social media

Social media is taking over the world. It was not as much of a problem when I was applying to college, but today colleges can learn more about a future student by stalking their Instagram than by reading their resumes. Too bad most colleges won’t be seeing the upstanding citizen they claimed to be on paper. Instead they will see the awkward teenager with a beer in one hand and red solo cups scattered all along the ground. “Teen drinking is really bad” is not what society is saying anymore, but blurting out to the world that you’re drinking underage is something all high school students today seem to be very proud of, BUT SHOULD NOT BE! Be discreet like the past generations I mean they got into college didn’t they?

4. College Freedom?

Parenting has seemed to evolve over the past few years. The term curfew has almost disappeared all together. I use to have to be home at 12 until my senior year where by some miracle it got pushed back an entire 30 minutes. Now a days curfew, if any, are set around 2 am. Also, they’re most likely not coming home in the same car they left in. Instead they may have taxis pick them up or the all so famous Uber. They may never understand how amazing that first week is away from home where you’re in charge of your own schedule. The sense of freedom you get when nobody is blowing up your phone waiting for you to knock on their bedroom door. High school students basically have the college freedom but are having everything paid for in the comfort of their own home.

5. Never will they ever be as grateful for puberty

Hollister for most of us was still in our closest freshman year. At least a few pieces made it through the transition of 8th grade to 9th. A large majority of us even suffered through braces until we were close to sixteen. Today high school students are often as stylish as we are and are more familiar with Invisilign than braces. Puberty to them is more about the little things like growing a few inches or change of voices and less about horrifying acne and awkward bodies. Transformations Tuesdays for teens now is nowhere near as drastic as the interesting looking characters we use to be.
