Everyone who grew up watching the iconic sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” has been longing for October 26: the day when Netflix would finally drop the first season of its newest revival series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
Only here’s the thing…Sabrina’s not the same witch she used to be. In this newest adaptation, all is not as it seems in the small town of Greendale, where witches and other beings of great darkness and mischief lurk around every corner. The show follows the life of teenager Sabrina Spellman as she struggles to find a balance between her identity as half-human, half-witch, while facing off against evil forces that threaten the lives of those closest to her. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is funny, dramatically dark and definitely not for the fainthearted. Here are five reasons why you need to watch it right now:
1. The Nostalgia is Real
When I was younger, staying up late to watch re-runs of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” was a nighttime ritual. Truthfully, what wasn’t there to love? Between the iconic talking cat Salem and all the hilarious magical mishaps Sabrina would find herself in—who wasn’t wishing to be a witch? Fans of the original show who were skeptical of what the revival might have to offer should know that while “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” does embrace darker themes, it still sticks to the charm and humor that made the original fun to watch.Â
2. Sabrina’s One Bad Witch
Let’s get one thing straight–Sabrina is a total #girlboss. Even though she might look like a harmless cutie, Sabrina means business this time around and is seriously powerful. She’s taking charge of her life and fighting for her beliefs, despite the opinions of those around her. Sabrina Spellman didn’t come to play, and she “will not sign her name away.”
3. So Much Representation
“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” has an amazing cast of characters and actors who are not only SO talented but also incredibly diverse in respect to their race, gender and sexual orientation. In fact, one of Sabrina’s closest friends, Susie Putnam, not only identifies as non-binary, but is played by Lachlan Watson, an actor who identifies as being non-binary as well. The show makes it a point to push inclusion to the forefront of its narrative, even having Sabrina start her own Women’s Intersectional Cultural and Creation Association high school club.Â
4. The Soundtrack Bops
While the soundtrack may not be everyone’s favorite cup of tea, there are some songs on it that definitely will call to everyone’s spookier, darker side! For one, right now I’m loving musical artist IZA’s “I Put a Spell on You,” which will practically channel your inner witch…or warlock. To complement the show’s retro aesthetic, the soundtrack really outdoes itself by featuring The Ronettes “Be My Baby” and Eddie Lovette’s “Sixteen Candles.”
5. It’s Captivatingly Dark
I’ve never personally been a fan of anything scary or even nearing the line of horror, but “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” will reel you in with its willingness to cross the line, which it does a multiple of times. The show doesn’t shy away from the absurd and the shocking. In fact, it embraces it. If you’re looking for a show to challenge your definition of bad versus good, then this is the one you’ll want to check out.
If you’re looking for something new to binge watch, I’m highly recommending you stop and check out the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. So take a seat and enjoy the show (chills guaranteed)!
