Everyone gets those snack cravings every now and then, but instead of reaching for those potato chips or the tray of cookies, give these 8 healthy snack ideas a try! Best part is, they are perfect for the dorm life, no need to worry about an oven or having it be time consuming!
1. Celery and Peanut Butter
You could even add almonds or raisins on top! This snack is also known as “ants on a log”. Not only is this a light snack, but the celery provides antioxidants as well as boosts digestion and helps with weight loss. The peanut butter is a source of protein as well as potassium.
2. Hummus and…
Not only is hummus delicious and a great source of fiber, it also tastes amazing with all different types of other healthy snacks such as carrots, celery, mini pitas, and/or even whole wheat crackers!
3. Greek Yogurt and Granola
One of my favorite and most refreshing snacks! The greek yogurt brand Dannon Oikos offers a “Triple Zero Nonfat Greek Yogurt” that I love and recommend. It has 0 added sugar, 0 artificial sweeteners, and a whopping 15 grams of protein! This is a snack that can definitely fuel you up for anytime during your day.
4. Trail Mix
This is a great choice because you can make it to your liking. You can add a variety of nuts (don’t forget almonds and pistachios, they are a great source of protein!), dried fruit as sweeteners, raisins, and even coconut flakes. Voila! Healthy and nutritious!
5. Veggies with [Low-Fat] Ranch Dip
Again, a super refreshing alternative. It gives you your daily dose of vegetables with a kick of flavor from the ranch dip. (Make sure to pick out the low-fat one!)
6. Popcorn
Now, try and stay away from the popcorn drenched in butter since it doesn’t offer any health benefits. However, plain popcorn does offer whole grains, fiber, and antioxidants. A good alternative would be the unsalted popcorn, but I understand wanting to add a pinch of salt for a little extra flavor!
7. Rice Cakes and Almond Butter
Make sure to try and find whole grain rice cakes in order to get those health benefits! Rice cakes are also fat free and low in sugar. The almond butter adds a nice sweet flavor as well as protein so you don’t tire of them as quick!
8. Oatmeal Bites
Probably the snack that takes the longest to make from the list (only by a few minutes) , but definitely worth it. They’re also known as “protein bites”. They are made with your choice of peanut butter or almond butter, oatmeal, honey, and chocolate chips (or M&Ms, dried blueberries, almonds, etc). You make little balls out of them and eat them. Have any extra? Throw them in the fridge/freezer to eat them when they’re cold later!
It’s always good to remember to eat things in moderation. As they say, “too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing” so try to find a balance in whatever it is you want to do for whatever you want to achieve! Enjoy your treats and never forget to treat yourself!
