Last week I ran into the stunning Ashley Roberts a few blocks away from UCF’s campus in downtown Orlando. She was out taking photos for an assignment, but she’s also a legitimately talented photographer! Go to http://ashleyroephotography.tumblr.com/ and check out her stuff!
There are a few things about her outfit that really caught my eye, starting with her simplistic crimson maxi dress. Perfect for day or night, these floor length basics are becoming a classic item every girl must have in her closet. Here’s a mini how-to guide on how to wear your maxi dress:
- Look for a dress that’s fitted, flattering and not too fabric-heavy. Too many layers or thick materials can end up looking uncomplimentary on any body shape.
- Make sure the bottom of the dress nearly touches the floor or falls past your ankles. Any shorter and you won’t be able to wear it with your fabulous heels!
- Beware of certain patterns. Horizontal stripes are always a NO unless they’re thin lined and two-tonal. Certain designs can look completely different on you than on the hanger.
- A belt will usually make every maxi dress look better. Whether you belt it on your upper ribs, waistline, or hips (depending on body type), you can’t go wrong.
My favorite standout accessory of Ashley’s has to be her collar necklace. Since last fall these necklaces have overwhelmingly become a prominent trend. Peter Pan or tuxedo collars can bump up the sophistication of any outfit. Use the necklace to bring attention to a naked neck (as shown on Ashley) or go collar-on-collar by wearing it with a boring, collared button-up shirt. Avoid wearing them with intricate patterned clothes or tons of accessories; this can make your outfit look too hectic.
