Lies Romantic Comedies Told Us

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Lie #1 –  When a guy acts like a total jerk, its only because deep down he’s secretly in love with you.

Truth-  If a guy is a jerk to you, then the odds are that he is just a jerk.

Lie #2– Fate will always bring the two of you together

Truth-  Fate is a very tricky thing. You can’t just sit around and wait for fate to magically bring you a man. You have put yourself out there and let him know what you want!

Lie #3- The popular cool guy secretly has a heart of gold and will defy everything and everyone to be with you once he sees your internal and external beauty.

Truth-Yeah…no. It’s very rare that a boy in high school or even college has the emotional maturity to leave everything behind to be with you.

Lie #4– Gross immature boys can suddenly blossom in caring, self-actualized men!

Truth- False. Most of the time gross immature boys become gross immature men.

Lie #5- Don’t worry if he’s with someone else! He’ll always dump her to be with you!

Truth- Not true. Nope.

Lie #6- If you utterly despise a guy then don’t worry! You’ll have a sudden change of heart and fall madly in love with him.

Truth- There’s probably good a reason why you utterly despise someone, and a relationship founded upon mutual hatred is not going to be a healthy one.

Lie #7- Guys are always going to be gorgeous, witty and charming

Truth- Sorry ladies. Matthew McConaughey is not going to show up and sweep you off your feet.

Lie #8- The quirkier you are, the more he’ll like you

Truth- Some guys are immature and don’t realize that women a wide variety of personalities. If you do find a guy who loves you for your quirky self, then you’ve found a keeper because boys like that seem to be the exception to the rule.

Lie #9- Your perfect guy will be the one you’ve known was there all along!

Truth- If he was your perfect guy you would be dating him already. Duh.

Lie #10- You’ll always get your dream guy in the end.

Truth- Not always. However, getting a dream guy and living happily ever after should not be where your life movie ends. You can be happy and fulfilled with or without a man.

Jillian James is a senior at the University of Central Florida. She is majoring in Writing and Rhetoric and minoring in Mass Communication (because apparently you can’t minor in Beyoncé studies). Her favorite food is free because she is a college student and the two loves of her life are Ben and Jerry (of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream fame). If she’s not writing or reading she is probably watching The Office or waiting in line at Starbucks. She loves to show off her dance moves in “inappropriate” places like the grocery store. You can follow her on Twitter and Instagram @Jillianrosej, where she frequently posts things that make people think that she has her life together.
