Meeting New People

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

All schools have cliques. And as much as you might think you aren’t in one, chances are you are. They are typically revolved around certain spheres. You have the jocks, band players, the art students, and those more school-focused students. These cliques were a way to define us in high school. All you had to say was that you were a cheerleader and then the other person would suddenly have flashes of a not-too-friendly personality, drunken parties, and a little too flirtatious nature with the football players. But one of the great things about college is that you have the chance to redefine yourself and be free of these connotations. So instead of sticking with the same type of friends that you would normally swarm to, make some new friends. Find yourself a part of many different cliques, instead of restrained to just one.

If you’ve read the book, or at least watched the movie, then you probably thoroughly enjoyed The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. One of the things that really appealed to me was that four different girls, with completely different personalities, came together and formed a friendship that lasted their entire life. You don’t see that too much these days. People tend to choose friends that have the same interests and likes as them. While there’s nothing wrong with this, you shouldn’t keep trying to find duplicates of yourself.

One of the things that I recommend is to start talking. Talk to the stranger who wears a little too much black in your class, or the hippie musician at your local café. You might find that you really like the things they introduce you to and you really like them. Just because people are not in your comfort circle of friends, doesn’t mean that they can’t offer you a great friendship. And by making some new friends, you wont be known as that sporty girl. You’ll be something far greater because you decided that wasn’t enough.
