Fall is officially here, and for many of us that means change is coming. While the leaves won’t be changing down here in Orlando, we can still expect plenty of seasonal additions to wardrobes, menus, and front lawns. But we can’t forget about ourselves. To be extraordinary is to go beyond what is usual, to be unique or exceptional, and this fall I challenge all of you Collegiettes to do just that. Here are ten ways to get your fall season off to a great start.

  1. As soon as you wake up blast your favorite song and throw yourself a one-woman dance party. Start your day worry-free. Pay no attention to roommates, rhythm, volume, dance moves, or how you look— nothing matters but you and the music. It’s your time to let it all out.
  2. Make someone’s day! Pay for the coffee of the person in line behind you.
  3. Tip your server 100%, and leave without seeing how he or she reacts.
  4. Give a homeless person a book.
  5. Donate clothing that you don’t wear or need anymore to local charities and homeless shelters.
  6. When planning an outing, grab some friends and go anywhere but the usual places. Check out a drive-in movie (there’s one in Lakeland!), a speakeasy themed bar, go stand up paddleboarding, or check out the local springs like Wekiwa Springs or Blue Springs.  Do some research to find out what you’re missing out on in your town.
  7. Make a scavenger hunt for a friend of items around campus (or Orlando) and feel great while they get to go through all the items.
  8. And because you’re an independent lady, step outside of your comfort zone and take yourself on a date. It’s an empowering and satisfying feeling to have eaten a meal and gone to a movie by yourself, and to fall asleep at the end of the night happy.
  9. Write a letter to your future self. Sign and date it and store it for safekeeping. Include an “open on” date and set a reminder on your phone or computer.
  10. Don’t wait until New Years to start writing your resolutions. Write down a list of goals you’d like to do in the next year and store it somewhere you’ll see it, periodically checking off your progress.
