The Timeless Accessory

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

There are many accessories that we rely on to add that extra spark to our outfit. Rather this be a trendy bracelet, a pair of chandelier earrings, or even that colossal ring we like to pull out at times. But over time, most of these embellishments tend to go out of style and you find yourself pushing them to the back of your jewelry drawer. And if you don’t believe me, lets take a trip down fashion memory lane. In middle school I distinctly remember when chokers and slap bracelets were all the rage. Or even more recently, sporting feathers (which I really like) in one’s hair is becoming the new fad. But just wait a few months, or even years, and we may find ourselves saying, what were we thinking? One of the things that I believe have the power to become timeless are every girls’ favorite accessory – shoes.

When I say shoes, I’m not talking about crocs–which I still believe to be the worst fashion faux pas–I mean shoes from high-end designers. Those shoes that make your heart quicken when you set your sights on them. Vera Wang has been designing shoes since the late 1990s, and if you find a pair from that time, you know you have a real treasure. Even Steve Madden’s shoes are still highly coveted, and he started his company in 1990. But if you’re looking for vintage shoes from a certain designer, you wont find them in stores. Now is the time to start scavenging through your local antique stores or garage sales if you want a good price. You can also look online, but chances are the prices will be much higher. The best pair of shoes comes along when you least expect it; you just stumble upon them like a gift from the lingering spirit of Carrie Bradshaw.

These classy and sophisticated shoes are usually in the form of high heels. They’re the shoes that you want to wear everyday, and nobody would blame you if you did. But you don’t have to look to the past to find your timeless accessory. Go to a Jimmy Choo or Louis Vuitton store today and I promise you, those shoes that you buy will last you a lifetime. So while your eyes may bulge when you see the price, think of it as an investment for your fashion future. So rather it be for business or pleasure, these shoes won’t allow you to push them to the back of the closet.

Shoes are becoming one of my new favorite things to shop for. I never fully realized how much they could make an outfit. But when you see a gorgeous dress paired with say, a pair of converse (Kristen Stewart, MTV Movie Awards 2009), you can’t help but shudder. Having a few pairs of shoes that you cherish and covet will be amazing on those days that you find yourself thinking, I have nothing to wear! And don’t think a nice pair of shoes will only last you that season, they have the potential to last much longer than that. So while certain fashion accessories may come and go, look at shoes as the exception.Â
