It happens every year. One day you’ll be walking by a familiar spot on campus and the next you’ll find it’s blocked by Under Construction signs. It’s inevitable. UCF is a school that is always growing and building, but most of us don’t even know what’s being built. Since most of this construction is not state funded (which means that it’s coming out of our pockets), shouldn’t you know what you’re paying for? I certainly think so. So here are some of the projects that UCF is working on, and maybe now when you see this vision of upturned earth and metal you will actually know what it means!
Classroom Building 2: You probably have started to see the heap of construction by the psychology building. Since we have a Classroom Building 1, we must have a Classroom Building 2 for the world to make sense. But, since we seem to be maintaining our status as the second largest school, the extra space couldn’t hurt. The projected finish date is July 25, 2013.
Greek Houses: If you have driven down Greek Park lately, you may have seen the beginning formation of two confirmed new sorority houses. The houses, which are expected to house Kappa Kappa Gamma and Chi Omega, will be in the empty area next to the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority house. Also, being built is the Fraternity and Sorority Life Center, which will be used for all things Greek. These new houses will be finished in 2013. Sorority girls everywhere may snap for joy.
Library: I had the opportunity to sit down with President Hitt recently and he talked about some of the upcoming plans for UCF. Something that he is excited about is the renovation of the library. He also mentioned how checking out a book will be much like getting a DVD out of a Redbox machine. Interesting? Check. Since the air conditioning is the same one that was put in when it was first constructed, I couldn’t be happier. Not to mention, the last time I was in the library I saw a cockroach crawling on the floor. Ew.
UCF is known for always doing some kind of construction work. While it is great to be able to have the most up-to-date university, you can’t help wondering who is paying for all of this construction (a lot of it is us) and when enough is enough. But since there isn’t much we can do, just sit back and enjoy the yellow hardhat view.
