What I’m Looking Forward to this Summer: The World Cup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Football is a sport loved worldwide. It was not until the summer of 2010 that I truly became interested in watching the World Cup. Unashamed, I spent a month professing my love to all the beautiful foreign players. What started out as an excuse to watch hot guys but transformed into an appreciation for the sport.

The 2014 World Cup will be held on June 12th through July 13th. The tournament is broken down into 8 groups with four teams. These teams compete against each other to make it out of the group stage. Then in the round of 16, the finalists and runner ups from the group stage play against each other to qualify for the semifinals.  Two teams will remain in the final match for the World Cup.

If you’ve never watched soccer before, the game is easy to follow. The weirdest thing to come to terms with, would be the transition after halftime. The teams switch sides on the field. Try to avoid watching a game that is slow because you may lose interest quickly. You’ll be rewarded at the end of each match when players exchange jerseys as a sign of sportsmenship.

I only know one way to convince you to watch at least one game:

David Luiz (Brazil)

Before you know it, you will yell out your frustration at bad calls from referees and annoying players who fumble in poor attempts to manipulate referees. You’ll also cheer on teams who become your favorite and bad mouth teams you will come to hate. You’ll smile in astonishment when an amazing goal is made. Like me, you will also declare your love to multiple suitors!
