There are lots of things we students don’t learn before we go away to college; and plenty more we wish we learn in the classroom but don’t.

While there can’t be a class for everything, there are resources available (like this tax guide on the library’s website!) to help all 60,000 of us learn the little lessons of Life 101.

Health Class:

Despite all the semester-long stress, there are no self-help books on the syllabus or burning incense in the library. Luckily, The Counseling Center offers various workshops such as, Strategies for Managing Anxiety, Achieving Deep Relaxation, and Embracing Mindfulness; so go learn how to meditate and find your inner peace!

If hitting the gym is your way of relieving stress, try some yoga. Yoga relieves physical, mental, and emotional stress, and leaves you feeling peaceful, balanced, and ready for the day! Check out the Rec and Wellness Center Website for a full schedule of yoga, pilates, and group exercise schedule times.

Self- Defense 101:

It’s never too late to learn some self-defense! Some ladies learned in high school, some in classes and some never did. So to ensure our safety, the UCF Police offers S.A.F.E. at the UCF Police Department, (Self-defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange) and for only $5!

There’s a class coming up on Tuesday, November 12th 5-7pm.

Another way to kick butt on campus is at the Cardio Kickboxing class at the Rec and Wellness Center!

How to Get a Job:

Most people come out of high school with no clue how to write a cover letter, let alone how get a job. Here at UCF, thankfully we have Career Services, where students can learn how to gain professional experience related to their majors, write resumes, and even  practice interviewing skills!

Intro to Computers:

While Generation Y needs no “Intro to Internet” class, learning some HTML to make websites or the basics of SEO could really boost a resume. Even talking about the proper use of social media could be helpful!

Throughout the semester UCF offers free beginner workshops in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop in Computer Center I. Check out the Events Calendar for a list of all the workshops and events offered!

When in doubt…

If you have any questions about life then Ask Mom! Every Wednesday 11:30am- 1:30pm, those lovely ladies handing out cookies and free advice outside the Student Union are moms with loads of encouragement and wisdom on relationships, time management, nutrition, life, etc.

While high school may have left many of us seemingly ill prepared for the collegiette world of early mornings, demanding exams, late nights at the library, over-caffeination, bills, and figuring out taxes, the resources available at UCF can help us to hone those life skills not typically taught in school so when we leave we’ll be ready to take on the world!
