“What’s the point if you have no man,” said my roommate. There is a common misconception that there is no point to Valentine’s Day if you are single. However, after ending a three-year-relationship, I realized that sometimes Valentine’s Day is not about having a significant other. At its core, the holiday is meant to celebrate love. One of the many things better than romantic love is self love. Regardless of whether you are single or in a relationship, take this Valentine’s Day to appreciate yourself!
- Gift yourself with your favorite sweets.
-
Buy yourself your version of flowers and chocolate. Do not wait for someone to treat you like a queen when you are already one. A queen does not wait for anyone. If you want to buy yourself a new piece of jewelry, a spa day or a mani-pedi, do it! You never need a reason to pamper yourself. Even if you cannot splurge on something expensive, find a treat within range that will reward you for being you because you deserve it.
- Dress up for yourself.
-
Put on an outfit that makes you feel like your best self. You do not need anyone to compliment you. Sure, getting compliments from others is great, but the only approval you really need is from yourself. Whether you are strutting in Vans or high heels, dress up for yourself.
- Do what makes you happy.
-
Valentine’s Day is all about you. If you want to stay in bed all day watching Netflix, go ahead! If you want to go eat at a fancy restaurant, do it! You work hard, so take a day to unapologetically think about your needs. Regardless of what you choose, do not forget that a nice bath with a bath bomb might be a great way to end your day.
- Stay off social media.
-
Remember to stay off social media if you anticipate it making you feel bad. Remember that not everything is as perfect as it appears on social media. If you are in a relationship that does not look as “great” or “romantic” as the ones on social media, think about what makes your relationship unique and special. If you are single, remember that this is your chance to love yourself and get to know yourself.
Valentine’s Day is all about you, so make sure that you spend it celebrating yourself and treating yourself right!
