Carrie Bradshaw once said, “There are very few things this New Yorker loves as much as Sunday brunch. You can sleep until noon and still get eggs anywhere in the city, alcohol is often included with the meal, and Sunday is the one day a week you get the single woman’s sports pages: The New York Times wedding section.” Brunch in Los Angeles can be just as fun, especially for college students like us, who wake up late on Sunday mornings after a Saturday night out.
Waking up too late for breakfast and too early for lunch can lead to a dilemma: what to eat? When you find yourself in this predicament, gather up your crew and make plans for a brunch extravaganza filled with stories about the festivities from the night before as well as plans for the upcoming week! If you’ve woken up a little toolate and can’t afford to go too far (or spend too much), look no further than the De Neve, Covel, and Hedrick dining halls. With rotating specials, all you can eat fruit and pastries, and a campus-favorite omelet and waffle bar, these dining halls give you everything you need to create the right environment for feasting and talking.
If you can afford to spend a little more time and money, venture into Westwood and check out Corner Bakery Café, Novel Café, or Le Pain Quotidien for delicious breakfast food in a more grown-up atmosphere. All three serve up coffee, juices and traditional brunch dishes. Go to Corner Bakery if you and your friends are in the mood for scrambled eggs and want to stay and study, visit Le Pain Quotodien if you feel like having a gourmet omelette with some of their home-made baked goodies, or choose Novel Cafe if you and your friends all are in the mood for organic, healthy eats. They serve everything from whole grain pancakes and bacon to huevos rancheros and lox.
If you feel like turning your brunch into a special occasion with a more distinguished atmosphere à la Sex and the City, there are many places in the surrounding Los Angeles neighborhoods that are classy and affordable. Huckleberry in Santa Monica has major curb appeal and attracts a well-dressed crowd who come for the organic eggs dishes as well as sandwiches, as breakfast and lunch are both served from 8am to 3pm on the weekends. Jack n’ Jill’s in Beverly Hills is close to campus and right across from a free parking garage. It offers good people-watching and window-shopping in the surrounding blocks, as well as delicious baked goods and all-day breakfast. If you are of age and want to spill secrets over mimosas, check out brunch at Lola’s on Fairfax. On Sundays between 10am and 2:30pm, you and your friends can enjoy $10 bottomless mimosas and reasonably priced food. If all else fails, head down to Trader Joe’s for some eggs, pancake mix, champagne and orange juice to make your own girls’ brunch at home on a whim. The food at brunch really comes second in importance to the conversation that accompanies it, so whatever path you choose to go, make sure that you have your Samanthas, Charlottes and Mirandas with you!
