Every once in a while, you witness a UCLA fashionista strutting it down Bruin Walk, showing the world her sense of high quality taste. This week, I managed to capture Shavvon Lin, who gave me some insider info on her collegiette style.
Year: Freshman.
Hometown: Guangzhou.
Major: Undeclared, social sciences.

How would you describe your style?
When I step out of my room, I want to see myself in the way that I want myself to be. I want to like my look every day. That’s why I don’t dress for anyone else, I dress for myself: I want to feel good. I would say that my style varies every day, but my inspiration, or my “icon” is Victoria Beckham. In two words, I would say my style is “simple chic.’
What do you think of UCLA’s style, and how is the style where you came from?
I have to say when I first came here, I felt like people just wanted to wear what they were comfortable with! People here definitely like to show off their bodies, sometimes even when it doesn’t look too good. But you can definitely see some gorgeous looking people here.
In my circle, people care about their look, but I don’t think that the majority of Cantonese people are fashionable! (laugh) But I do think Hong Kong is better.
Any favourite stores?
My favourite brand is Stella McCartney, and she’s also one of my biggest inspirations as I don’t wear anything in animal skin. With makeup as well – I don’t use any brands that use animal testing. So generally, I use natural skincare brands such as Chanel, Dior. I got some of my clothes from 3.1 Phillip Lim (very simple chic!), Maxmara, and DVF.
Best place to shop in LA so far!
I actually just came back from my first shopping spree in LA today! I went to 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.
Style muses?
My biggest icon is Victoria Beckhman, but I get inspiration from Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly.
What are some activities that you do/clubs you’re involved in?
I’m the organiser for the CSSA fall dance, a formal event with the theme “Oscar Night”  – aka. everyone in gorgeous clothes! It’s in 20 days, so definitely come if you can. I’ve also been singing for years now, and my style is R&B/Soul – which is something that you don’t usually see Asians doing! I’m in the Music Club and I’ll be performing in the Band Nights. I want to at least minor in music, or double major if I can. I’ve also danced ballet for 14 years.
