Courtney Randall: Spring Sing Winner
By: Amy Hawkins
1. How did you get into music? Did you take lessons or perform in school plays?
I’ve been singing my whole life and first performed in the 2nd grade talent show with the song “Tomorrow” from Annie. I sang at many other talents shows and did singing competitions as I grew up. I taught myself to play guitar when I was 15 and began writing my own songs.
2. I’ve noticed a lot of your songs involve religion – how important is that to your songwriting?
As a Christian I definitely want my songs to promote positive and loving messages, and it is important to me that I set the right example for people who listen to my music, especially young girls.
3. How has winning Spring Sing affected you?
Spring Sing was so amazing; I felt so honored to even be in the show! It opened up a lot of opportunities for me, like the chance to perform at the Grammy Museum in downtown LA, exposure so that I can play in more shows at UCLA, and it even led to the management deal I now have with Sneakers & Bowties, which I am super excited about!
4. What else do you do? Any activities around campus?
I play for the UCLA Women’s Lacrosse team, and plan events for the hill residents as a Programmer on the On Campus Housing Council (OCHC).
5. Do you plan on making a career out of music, or are you pursuing something else?
I am definitely pursuing music and am so excited to be in the recording studio now! I plan to get my degree from UCLA in Psychology and my management company really supports that. I am very grateful I can pursue both a bachelor’s degree and a career in the music industry!
6. What can we expect from you next?
I will be performing at the Pi Kapp Acoustic Coffeehouse benefit concert on January 24th. I am working on writing and recording in the meantime, and plan on releasing an EP within the next few months!
