This week, let’s talk about a love story that’s written in crisp black lines — my obsession with well-executed eyeliner looks! Nothing catches more attention than a twinkling eye accented by a classic wing, and this eyeliner style has been a staple in my daily makeup look ever since I mastered a steady line. However, when the wing starts to feel a little basic when you do one everyday (like me), it might be time to unleash your inner artist and let the strokes fly. If you’re looking for a place to start, here’s a week’s worth of inspiration (featuring my hooded eyes) to level up your basic wing with a little bit of creativity the next time you decide to dazzle the world with merely a glance:
- MONDAY: Define the Outline
-
We’re starting simple! If you’re only used to defining the wing on the outer corner and maybe drawing the eyeliner close to the upper lash line, this might be a great stepping stone to the more dramatic ideas. A clean waterline or smoky lower lash line fill can significantly enhance your natural eye shape. Combine that with a little extended inner corner wing to balance the wing on the other side and you have an eye-catching look. If you’re feeling adventurous, try softening and smoking out the look with a little black eyeshadow.
- TUESDAY: Double Double
-
Double the wings, double the fun. An additional wing parallel or perpendicular to the primary wing can add just the right amount of flair to level up your next makeup look. There are many different placements for the secondary wing; I personally prefer doing a thin perpendicular one underneath the primary wing, creating a fluttery effect. Visually, connecting a parallel second wing to the lower lash line will lift the outer corner and give your eyes a snatched look.
- WEDNESDAY: lotta Linework
-
Yes, I know, those intricate graphic eyeliner looks on Pinterest are intimidating. However, they all start simple: take a base eyeliner and add lines around it. If you struggle with symmetry, maybe trying a purposefully asymmetrical pattern would be better; then you can really practice your freehand skills. For hooded eyes with limited lid space, focus on the area under the brows and under the wing, using the thinnest lines possible.
- THURSDAY: All dotted UP
-
Dots are my favorite way to start experimenting with an eye makeup look! Put them in a line, a circle, a swirl, or just scatter them around – as long as you keep them even or symmetrical, they add a nice little elegant touch to your winged liner and draw attention to different parts of your face, depending on how you place them. I suggest starting off with dotted lines parallel to the wing or placing 2-4 dots around each eye to explore how the placement alters your look.
- FRIDAY: STAMp some shapes
-
A level up from the dots, we’re now looking at shapes. This is my go-to technique to connect my makeup to my outfit if it has a theme. As a lover of celestial aesthetics, I usually draw stars around my wing and place them like I would place dots. Drawing tiny hearts and other shapes on your fingertip and then stamping them on is an easy, fool-proof way to achieve the same effect. These stamps don’t have to be right next to the liner; try spacing them out and putting them near the top of your cheekbone and see that facial structure pop!
- saturday: go gems!
-
For a day-to-night or gameday look, gems bring that extra sparkle to a regular wing. Like dots, there is a lot of room to experiment with size and placement, so grab some reusable sticky gems and play around!
P.S. I firmly believe that no number of gems is too many.
- sunday: hundreds of hues
-
Finally, it’s time to ditch the classic black wing and bring in a pop of color! Colorful eyes can really boost an outfit when dopamine dressing, and this can be combined with any of the six ideas discussed above. I am partial to solid hot pink and olive green eyeliner, but metallic shades also routinely find their way into my makeup looks. Pinterest has a lot of great inspiration for colorful eyeliner looks, so I encourage you to try some out!
These were some eyeliner looks you could try for a week! I know that each one may take a little while to master, but I promise that you won’t regret trying them out. Good luck and have fun with these styles!
