The basics of building a capsule wardrobe: finding versatility through minimalism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

I’m no stranger to the massive clothing hauls of TikTok and Youtube. With brands and influencers constantly preaching to us that we always need more, it can be pretty easy to buy into this trend of fast-fashion. However, I’ve come to learn that this route is expensive, terribly unsustainable and often ends up making us feel like we have even less to wear. If you feel like you’ve become a victim of overconsumption culture as well, I have a solution: building a capsule wardrobe.

The basic idea of a capsule wardrobe is having less items overall while prioritizing versatility and timelessness with the items you do have. Having versatile pieces allows you to create endless combinations to fit any occasion. Now that I’ve simplified my closet, I find it so much easier to put together outfits than when I had a bunch of trendy items. I don’t feel compelled to buy as many random items anymore, so I’m saving money in the process.

If you’re tired of micro-trends and ready to make the shift, here are the major categories I think you should focus on in a capsule wardrobe. Just know, the process of switching for me was very gradual. I’ve accumulated pieces over time and much of the basics most people already own.

t-shirts

I suggest starting with basic colors; I personally like black, white and brown. These kinds of neutral colors can be paired with really any pants, skirts or other bottoms. I like having a small variety of styles as well (regular t-shirts, long sleeved, crop tops and tanks). These can be switched up depending on your personal style.

outerwear

You can take this in so many directions; however, you should be sure to steer towards pieces that can be used in several outfits. Personally, I’m a huge fan of blazers. They can be used in so many outfits for really any level of formality. Though they can be pricey, I have found my favorite blazers for much less at the thrift store. Crewnecks are incredibly versatile and comfy too. Of course, you can never go wrong with sweaters as well.

jeans

No matter your personal aesthetic, a good pair of jeans is a must. You can give it your own flair by choosing your favorite fit, color and style. The possibilities with jeans are endless, and my mom jeans are definitely the most worn item in my closet.

dressy bottoms

These are basically any bottoms that aren’t denim. Trousers are good to pair with any tops depending on the vibe you’re going for. If you’re looking to splurge a little, I can’t recommend the Aritzia effortless pants enough. Additionally, I’d clump skirts into this category as well.

shoes and accessories

This is where you can really get creative and build your own style. Bags, jewelry and shoes allow you to elevate your fit to make it feel more like you. In my opinion, a tote bag and sneakers go with any outfit and make it look so much better. If I’m ever really wanting to play into trends, I do it with accessories.

For more inspiration, this video by Delaney Childs and many others on YouTube are super helpful. Of course, these are just the basics and can be tailored to create whatever aesthetic you’re into. Just keep versatility and timelessness in mind, and you’re on the way to building your own capsule wardrobe!
