Tips to Manage Stress before Finals!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Whether it comes in the form of a lot of homework, a final, a contentious argument with your loved one, a worrisome health problem, or a traffic jam, stress is a part of everyday life. While some stress is inevitable, when your body repeatedly encounters a set of physiological changes dubbed the stress response, trouble can brew.

We don’t suggest you follow these instructions!

Warning Signs of Stress:

  1. Dizziness or a general feeling of “being out of it”

  2. General aches and pains

  3. Grinding teeth, clenched jaw

  4. Increase in or loss of appetite

  5. Difficulty concentrating

  6. Muscle tension in neck or shoulders

  7. Problems sleeping

  8. Racing heart

  9. Cold and sweaty palms

  10. Tiredness, exhaustion

Here are some tips to help us, Bruins, keep stress at bay (especially with finals ahead):

  1. Keep a positive attitude, smile on.

  2. Be assertive instead of aggressive.

  3. Learn and practice relaxation techniques; try meditation, listening to soothing music or yoga.

  4. Exercise regularly given that your body can fight stress better when it is fit. Take a brisk walk around campus or visit the John Wooden Center.

  5. Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.

  6. Learn to manage your time more effectively. Set limits appropriately and say no to requests that would create excessive stress in your life.

  7. Make time for hobbies and interests to take your mind off any worries.

  8. Get enough rest and sleep.

  9. Seek out social support. Spend enough time with those you love.

  10. Seek treatment with a professional trained in stress management or biofeedback techniques to learn more healthy ways of dealing with the stress in your life by simply visiting our Counseling and Psychological Services at the John Wooden Center West.

Madeline Hunt is a senior at UCLA majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Spanish. Originally from the laidback beach-town of Santa Barbara, the California native finds the fast-paced nature and eccentricity of LA extremely exciting. Once more, she decided to expand her horizons when she studied abroad this past fall in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Madeline wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and is considering broadcast journalism and public relations as potential options. On campus, she is currently the Public Relations & Marketing Director for the student- run organization Fashion and Student Trends and an intern at E! News. She served as an entertainment reporter on UCLA’s accredited student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, under the video division and is a current member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. During her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, exercising, going to the beach, shopping (online shopping will be the death of her!), reading Glamour and Cosmo, eating Mexican food and sushi, spending time with her friends, practicing her Spanish, and satisfying her weakness for caffeine with Starbuck’s lattes.
