This week, Her Campus at UCLA is partnering with UCLA CHAARG to host a yoga event for breast cancer awareness. Our fitness class will be hosted via Zoom this Friday, October 23rd at 5:30PM. This event will give college students the ability to participate in a stress-relieving and energizing yoga class from the comfort of their own home – just bring yourself and your yoga mat!Â
UCLA CHAARG is a health and fitness community on over 80 college campuses. Their mission is to liberate people from the monotony of workout machines and gyms and show them that fitness can and should be fun by trying new workouts every week! UCLA CHAARG offers classes ranging from barre to boxing to zumba to lifting weights. Once you join CHAARG, you’ll have access to these weekly workouts and will be welcomed into a community filled with supportive empowerment. And anyone is able to participate, no experience required!Â
Our collaborative Zoom event will be hosted by Kayla Copeland, a full-time teacher and manager at Pleasure Point Yoga Studio, and be whisked away into the open-hearted practice of Yin Yoga. Kayla was introduced to the practice and benefits of yoga by her mother when she was just a teenager and has been passionate about the practice ever since. I’m very inspired by Kayla’s approach, which focuses on well-being and mindfulness, fluid movement and breath awareness and transformation from the inside out and building strength through alignment practice. When you think about these guiding practices and how they can translate from your yoga practice to the rest of your life, you can work towards a more energetic, stress-reduced and tranquil way of treating yourself and living out your days feeling more in tune with your body.
I’m not sure if I would go so far as to call myself a yogi, but the practice of yoga has helped me immensely in my college life in terms of a calmer headspace, more positive outlook on the day and overall improvement of my physical well-being and flexibility. College students often don’t have a lot of free time allotted in our schedules to take a breath, clear our heads and take a little time for ourselves and our bodies. But, even just half an hour of yoga will serve you throughout your entire day. It will allow you to take a step back, slow down your breath and appreciate life around you to feel alive and at ease, putting levity back in your step.
This event is extra special because it is in support of survivors and those currently affected by breast cancer. That’s why we’re asking everyone to wear pink when you come to the event! Donations are optional, but if you donate, you will be entered into a giveaway!Â
