Yes, it can and does happen. The freshman 15 is a real thing. I can tell you from experience. Okay, so maybe you won’t gain 15 pounds, but weight gain in general is a big possibility esprecially during freshman year! Here are some tips if you want to avoid the dreaded 15!Â
Keep healthy snacks in your room.
Unhealthy snacking is a big component of the freshman 15. Instead of chips and candy, try to keep fruit or healther options stashed in your dorm. Even when you want to snack, you won’t feel as guilty!Â
Don’t go crazy in the dining commons.
This one was a difficult one for me, personally. When you know you’re full, don’t be tempted to get more food just because you can!Â
Get a gym/workout buddy!Â
The hardest part about working out is getting yourself to go to the gym or go for a run. If you find a friend who can help keep you accountable for exercising, it can really help.Â
Find alternatives to going to the gym.
If you’re not much a gym person, find some alternatives! Try hiking, yoga, dancing, swimming, etc. There’s so many options to keep yourself active!Â
Moderation is key.
I’m not telling you to restrict youself and cut off sweets and junk food altogether. We all need a cookie or two sometimes, but hold yourself acountable for what you choose to put in your body.
