It’s that time of the quarter again. After you’ve just caught up with your friends, made new ones, and cured that annoying weekend hangover of yours, you check your calendar and realize that it’s MIDTERM SEASON!

Yes, we’ve all been there, done that. We’ve all taken espresso shots like a champ, and we memorize terms and dates until we forget our own names. Before you let the stress get to you though, here are some tips on how to relax while studying for your exams.

1. Make a Study Schedule

Planning ahead will reduce your anxiety. Although it is super easy to procrastinate, resist the urge! To start off, make a list of your priorities and midterm dates. Devote a few hours per task so you won’t have to worry about not understanding material at the very last minute. Studies show that if you’ve written down your goals, you have a higher chance of actually striving to reach them!

2. Go To The Beach

A perk of living at UCSB is the close proximity to the beach. Whether you’re in Chi-5 or on DP, the beach is probably about a 5-15 minute walk for most people. Take a friend with you, or go on a lonesome trip. Walking to the beach will relax you as you listen to the peaceful beachy breeze and the calming ocean waves. You’ll learn to appreciate the beauty around you and momentarily forget about your exams!

3. Take 5-10 Minute Breaks

This goes back to making a study schedule–you’ll get to pencil in your own breaks based on your personal preference. It’s amazing what a few short minutes can do. You’re not a machine, so it’s okay to take a few breaks here and there! Get up, walk around the block, or go on a campus for a quick trip. The change of scenery and movement will make it easier for you to focus on studying when you come back from your break.

4. Exercise

Exercising can actually help jog your memory! Doing any kind of physical activity such as swimming, running, basketball, or rock climbing can boost up your energy, so you’ll be able to stay awake during your study sessions.

5. Eat Well

We’ve all been guilty of taking out Cup Noodles during our study modes because it’s quick and easy, but the thing is, those have no nutritional value. Eating healthy during midterm season can improve your energy levels and help you focus. I would recommend meal-prepping if you don’t have much time to cook, and this website has multiple suggestions that can cater to your personal taste: https://sweetpeasandsaffron.com/19-healthy-lunch-meal-prep-ideas/.

6. Sleep

This is the most crucial step of all. Many students pull all-nighters or only sleep for two hours before their midterms, but according to Science Daily, staying up past your bedtime before a major exam promotes dysfunctionality and short-term memory. To avoid this, make sure to get enough sleep, especially the day before a midterm!
