With summer just around the corner, many of us are getting ready to venture to various locations around the world–whether that be back to our home towns or to a fabulous location such as the Bahamas. As we all know, traveling can be incredibly stressful; however, one of UCSB’s own, Justin Rushing, has created a convenient and easy way to ensure that you make your flights with minimal anxiety and trouble. Justin Rushing has created several iPhone and iPad applications for a multitude of airports around the country. So pause that game of Angry Birds or Words With Friends, and check out his applications today!
Â
What application did you create for the iPhone?
I’ve made 3 iPhone and 2 iPad apps for Santa Maria Airport, Tweed Connecticut Airport, and Santa Barbara Airport. They provide the user with live flight information for both incoming and departing flights as well as other info about the airport.
Â
Why did you choose to create this application?
I work for a company that provides different services to airports.
Â
How does one make their own iPhone application?
The first thing to know is how to write computer programs. You can find tutorials that tell you how to do everything, but you won’t understand what’s going on unless you learn at least basic programming first. After that, if you have a Mac you can download a special program called XCode, which allows you to write iPhone apps and test them on your computer.
Â
Are you receiving any financial benefits from your application?
Yes. I got paid to make the applications originally; however, I do not receive any financial compensation for each download.
Â
What does the future hold for you in the realm of technology?
After finals I will be working at a company called Procore, working on some web-based applications. In addition, I have a few side projects involving iPhone apps and websites up my sleeve that I hope to have launched some time over the summer.
