Rachel Scarlett, a junior at UC Santa Barbara, has taken every opportunity on campus to get involved. As Gamma Phi Beta’s Philanthropy Chair, she has gone above and beyond in organizing their annual Pancake Breakfast in support of a selected philanthropy. Q: How are you involved at UCSB? Clubs? Sorority?
A: I am in Gamma Phi Beta and I enjoy going to Hillel. I also volunteer with children regularly.
Q: What is your position in Gamma Phi Beta? Are there any upcoming events or philanthropies?
A: I am Fundraising Chair. Next weekend we are having our annual Pancake Breakfast.
Q: What is Pancake Breakfast?
A: Pancake Breakfast is our annual community-wide fundraiser that takes place in our chapter house’s courtyard, at 890 Camino Pescadero. The lovely ladies of GPHI will prepare breakfast that includes eggs, bacon, juice, Starbucks coffee and all you can eat pancakes, some with chocolate chips. The breakfast will be from 10-1pm on Sunday October 23, 2011.
Q: Who is allowed to come?
A: Anyone and everyone is allowed to come. About 800 UCSB students and about 200 others, including teachers, staff, families from the community, on-campus organizations and parents have attended in past years.
Q: What is the cost? Can you preorder tickets? Will you be selling tickets on campus?
A: One ticket is $5.00. Any member of Gamma Phi Beta has tickets to sell, AS ticket office is selling tickets on campus, and tickets will be sold at the door as well (still $5.00).
Q: Who do the proceeds go to? How did Gamma Phi Beta pick this organization?
A: Our national philanthropy is Campfire USA, it is a co-ed science camp (originally it was only for girls). Every year the proceeds from Pancake Breakfast allow us to send many underprivileged young girls to Campfire USA where they build confidence, make friends, and set goals for their future, all of which are values upheld by sorority women. We also make donations in our community to IVYP, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Dog Adoptions, and more.
Q: Is there any additional information you want to say about your philanthropy?
A: This year we hope to have more guests which means we can give more to philanthropies. Our theme this year is a French Breakfast (think Marie Antoinette). It is a great way to meet new people and eat a hearty breakfast for a good cause. We may be planning an eating contest, so come to find out!
