Preparing for the future
As COVID-19 seems to have made the last few years fly by, some of us may be uneasily facing the inevitable of searching for jobs, internships, or volunteer opportunities. Despite feeling a little unsettled about how quickly the past years have gone by and how fast the future is approaching, no need to fret—here are some sites to help you get started.Â
Using a UCSB account:Â
Most students, if not all, have probably heard of Handshake before. The site is a versatile platform providing a range of opportunities, no matter where or what position you seeking. I’d recommend this site to find jobs, internships, and other fulfilling opportunities to spice up your resume or even kickstart your career path.Â
The Parker Dewey site is also accessible using your UCSB information and provides chances to view Micro-internships. These internships are paid, short-term, professional assignments and the structure looks very similar to what new-hires and interns experience in terms of work. They allow students to exhibit their skills while also exploring career opportunities in an environment created to further construct networking prospects. Micro-internships also occur year-round, with the hours ranging anywhere from five to 40 hours each week. To learn more about Micro-internships and the Parker Dewey Site, please visit this site provided by UCSB.
Outside of UCSB portals:Â
Another great place to explore internship opportunities is the CA Intern Network. It offers both undergraduate and graduate students with part-time paid internships across California.Â
Besides those listed above, you can also utilize:Â
- https://www.internships.com/
All of these are reliable sites to begin your search, for whatever it may be that you are in the market for. In particular, LinkedIn is one of the most useful sites outside of UCSB’s resources as it’s a great platform for networking and communicating with others. Not only does it provide you with more opportunities, but you can talk with others who hold positions you are interested in and see if their job is the type of career you are looking for. I’d suggest this especially for those who have many interests and don’t know exactly what direction to follow. This site can help steer you on the right path for you.
Other suggestions:
If you’re still having difficulties exploring internships, new career prospects, or jobs, reach out to the UCSB Career Services which covers strategies to find options such as internships, student jobs, and other extracurriculars and programs. They also hold multiple events where you can further explore your interests and be guided with professional advice.
Even though COVID took years from us, you can still set yourself up for success. Good luck, you’ve got this Gauchos!
