Thanksgiving, otherwise known as Turkey Day, is a day most widely known for spending time with your family, being thankful for what we have, and obviously, eating turkey. But those of us who choose not to eat meat unfortunately stick out on this special day. We have to endure the endless questions and comments regarding our food habits, but we are strong, despite our protein “deficiency” and can get through the holiday with smiles. Here are some of the repeated questions and comments that we vegetarians get with each holiday:
“Oh my god, your whole family is vegetarian?! What do you guys eat on Thanksgiving?”
Actually, we just starve. We solely survive on lettuce. Just kidding. We eat cranberries, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, salad, and more. Some people find it baffling that we really don’t have a problem eating all of the sides, but it really is delicious and filling!
“Do you eat fish?”
Um, what? It’s shocking how many times I’ve heard this question. I don’t know in what world a fish isn’t an animal consisting of meat, but it is where I come from. Pescatarian is the word you’re looking for, which means you eat fish but no other meat. VEGETARIAN is what I said. It’s okay; I know it’s hard to hear over all the holiday chaos.
“You should really try the turkey. You might like it.”
No thanks. I don’t know why attempting to make vegetarians eat meat seems to be a fun game nowadays, but it really isn’t all that fun for us. So please, spare us. We’re quite happy with our very full plate of sides, thank you very much.
“You’re still going to eat pie right?”
Is that even a question? That’s the best and most important thing about Thanksgiving. Pumpkin, apple, or pecan, I’ll eat them all! So without further ado, where is the pie?
We all hear these questions and comments leading up to and on Thanksgiving day, but it’s even worse when you have to endure them at a house other than your own, especially a significant other’s home. But keep calm, you’ve done this all before. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your food (especially the pie)!
Happy Thanksgiving!
