Seven Taylor Swift Bridges to Belt Your Heart Out To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSC chapter.

As a self-proclaimed Swiftie, I am here to tell you that Taylor Swift’s bridges go hard. There’s never a time that I don’t want to scream Taylor Swift lyrics at the top of my lungs while speeding down the streets with my besties. Unfortunately, that won’t be possible for a while, but the next time you’re having a solo karaoke session add these to your mix, you won’t regret it. I didn’t put them in any particular order. Each one is beautiful, and each one deserves to be recognized as good!

7. Seven

Seven is one of those reminiscent, soft songs that takes you back to your childhood when things were so much simpler. It sounds and feels like you’re walking through a mildly haunted dream, as evidenced in the bridge:

And I’ve been meaning to tell you

I think your house is haunted

Your dad is always mad, and that must be why

And I think you should come live with me

And we can be pirates

Then you won’t have to cry

Or hide in the closet

And just like a folk song

Our love will be passed on

6. Tolerate It

Whew. This song hurts. But this bridge? Obliterates me. There are simply no other words.

“While you were out building other worlds, where was I?

Where’s that man who’d throw blankets over my barbed wire?

I made you my temple, my mural, my sky

Now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life

Drawing hearts in the byline

Always taking up too much space or time

You assume I’m fine, but what would you do if I”

5. You Are In Love

This is the sort of song that you can’t dedicate to someone because if you break up, this song will haunt you forever. It’s perfectly wonderful and is reminiscent of the very simple moments that remind you of your unique love story. I especially enjoy the last line of this bridge and it always brings me to tears, reflecting upon Taylor Swift’s entire discography & what she’s tried to capture with her songwriting.

And so it goes

You two are dancing in a snow globe, ’round and ’round

And he keeps a picture of you in his office downtown

And you understand now

Why they lost their minds and fought the wars

And why I’ve spent my whole life trying to put it into words

4. Back To December

Oh, back in those Taylor Swift x Taylor Lautner days. Is it a universal experience to give something really good up, because Taylor sums up that feeling perfectly in this bridge:

I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile

So good to me, so right

And how you held me in your arms that September night

The first time you ever saw me cry

Maybe this is wishful thinking

Probably mindless dreaming

But if we loved again, I swear I’d love you right

I’d go back in time and change it, but I can’t

So if the chain is on your door, I understand

3. Begin Again

Oh. It’s another one of these again— the kind of bridge that makes me ball like a baby. This bridge is just pretty and feels safe. It’s one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs, and somehow feels bittersweet. Not sure why.

And we walked down the block to my car

And I almost brought him up

But you start to talk about the movies

That your family watches every single Christmas

And I want to talk about that

And for the first time, what’s past is past

2. You Belong With Me

Oh to be a teenager and fall in love with your next-door neighbor. I don’t care what Kanye West says, the “You Belong With Me” music video was a cultural reset. This is the perfect song to sing in the car, though your childhood bedroom will suffice as well :).

Oh, I remember you driving to my house

In the middle of the night

I’m the one who makes you laugh

When you know you’re ’bout to cry

And I know your favorite songs

And you tell me ’bout your dreams

Think I know where you belong

Think I know it’s with me”

1. All Too Well

Full stop. We are waiting on the nine-minute version of this song!! This is the perfect song to end your solo karaoke night. Even if you aren’t brokenhearted, it’s fun to pretend like you’re upset at some imaginary partner. Every single lyric in this song deserves to be screamed at the top of your lungs, but the bridge just gets me.

Maybe we got lost in translation

Maybe I asked for too much

But maybe this thing was a masterpiece

‘Til you tore it all up

Running scared, I was there, I remember it all too well

And you call me up again just to break me like a promise

So casually cruel in the name of being honest

I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here

‘Cause I remember it all, all, all

Too well
