DWOO: Promising UCSD DJ

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

Daniel Woo, or as many of you may know him as, DWOO, is a promising DJ who was born in Boston, Massachusetts. This 23 year old UCSD collegiette juggles his active DJ life with structural engineering classes and campus affiliations. On campus, you can catch DWOO at UCSD Club Soccer events and at KCM meetings. He is an avid fan of Boston Sports, like the Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, and also loves Manchester United. His hobbies include soccer, basketball, golf, snowboarding, DJing, hiking, watching movies, and working out. Read on to learn more about this stellar collegiate!

1. Explain your history of DJing.

I DJ events like weddings, formal events, Sorority Formals, UCSD events (alumni Events, dances), Triton Fest, ASCE Valentines day Dance, and clubbing events. Last year I spun for Euro Bash 2014 and FIJI Islander 2014. I make mixes and just try to make sure everyone is having a good time. You can control the mood and energy of your audience by the type of music you play. I make sure the music is continuously playing so there are no pauses or awkward moments.

2. Explain your style.

My style is based on the music I like mixed with what gives people a good time. I generally use more upbeat Hip-hop and Trap so people can turn up. It is very high energy. On the flip side I also really like throwbacks and old-school hip-hop, which has a lot of jazz and funk influence, so it gives it a smooth feeling. That way, you can chill and vibe with it.

3. Who are your inspirations?

My greatest inspirations come from Frank Sinatra (jazz), Biggie Smalls (hip-hop/rap), Dr. Dre (Hip-Hop/Rap), RL Grime (Trap), and Diplo (Trap).

4. Anything we should be on the look-out for, concerning Sun God 2015?

I saw Snoop Dogg at the UCLA Jazz Reggae Fest, as well as at Coachella. He is a great artist and a great performer. Everyone will be in for a treat. I will also be DJing at an afterparty at BASSMNT in downtown San Diego that night. It will be fun and a great way to finish off the night. My set will include a lot of hip-hop and Trap and a little bit of EDM. It will be a time to turn up. It will be a room crowded with high energy with the bangers and slaps.

5. Are there any artists UCSD students should listen to RIGHT NOW?

You should all listen to RL Grime, Slander, The group SOULECTION, and Junoflo.

6. What is your favorite song at the moment?

I have two! Don’t Leave ft. Ellie Goulding (Slander Heaven Trap Edit)- Seven Lions and Hey Ma by Camron.

7. How has UCSD made you who you are today?

UCSD introduced me to DVC where I was able to learn a lot more skills and knowledge about djing. I also met my best buddy, Sam Park (Junoflo), whom I got closer to music with. I got to where I am today because of him and how we pursued music together. I also met a lot of my closest friends now at UCSD or because of UCSD. I also learned what I want to pursue in life.

8. Where are your favorite spots in San Diego?

My favorite places to eat in SD are Lucha Libre, Regents Pizzaria, Oscars Mexican Seafood, Phils BBQ Restaurant, and of course, those Christian Fries at Vallartas. Places I like to chill are Gliders Port, La Jolla Shores, and The Loft on campus.

9. If you had to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you eat?

I would eat pasta for the rest of my life. I love all types of pasta and can eat it all the time. I can also eat Chipotle everyday, multiple meals a day actually. I love Chipotle.

10. Upcoming events?

I will be Spinning as an opening DJ for Pendulum at BASSMNT in Downtown San Diego right after Sun God. You can party bus there and back, kind of like an after party. If people do not know who Pendulum is, they are a trio that also consists of the duo Knife Party.

11. How can we reach you?

Check out my soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/daniel-woo). I went to Coachella had a great time! It was one of the best experiences in my life. I made a Coachella mix for people to listen to that includes a lot of the artists from the 2015 line up.
