The La Jolla Playhouse: A Hidden Gem of UCSD

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

Sometimes plays and musicals can seem stuffy. You sit down in a crowded theater full of other patrons, prepping yourself for two hours or more of acting, and possibly singing and dancing, while anticipating only a short fifteen-minute intermission in the middle. It’s all in good fun, but too much can feel repetitive.

This, however, is not the case at the La Jolla Playhouse. Located right across the street from Galbraith Hall, the playhouse is holding their critically acclaimed WOW! Festival from October 9-11, a festival of avant-garde and fantastical plays, exhibits, and music.

Imagine walking through a eucalyptus grove, joining the performers in their story, or walking through a maze of colors, light, and sound designed to ensnare the senses. Imagine sitting in a basketball court watching the intimate story of a young adult. From outdoor locations to experimental immersive experiences, La Jolla Playhouse and fellow contributing theater companies and artists are bringing exposure to adventurous, risk-taking art.

This year, UCSD and Triton Fest are helping college students to join the movement, creating a night of free shows, dance, and music. It’s a wonderful way to see theater in a new light and experience once-in-a-lifetime performances and effects.
