Being a student in a country with one of the highest crime rates in the world is no easy task, especially if you are an international student. You are constantly plagued with paranoia, especially womxn. As a country in which 1 in every 3 women has been sexually assaulted, it is important to stay safe. Here are a few important tips to stay safe:
1. Protect your Mental Health
As a student, anxiety could push you over edge at any time. As such, don’t be afraid to protect your mind. Make sure you have a solid support system and keep your mind alive. Exercise and meditation are crucially important to maintain a balanced mind.
2. Stay Guarded
Crime could occur at anytime, so stay alert. If you know society will put your body in a state of vulnerability be prepared. If possible, carry pepper spray or a taser in your hand bag you’re all set. These safety aids are available all over Cape Town.
3. Find a Mentally-Stimulating Hobby
Learn to play an instrument. Learn to play chess. Go to the gym. The options are endless. This assists in reducing stress and may allow you to expand your horizons.
4. Don’t hoard
Let go of all aged, outdated technology by either selling or donating them. This applies to clothes, mouldy notes and other unused household items.
5. Go to Music FestivalsÂ
Recent Psychological research has shown that attending music festivals improves mood and psychological well being. But if your student budget does not allow this, feel free to host a mini-music party for yourself.
