Being bold can be a daunting task for many collegiettes. Whether it’s stepping up and talking to that cute guy in your 8:30 a.m. lecture or having to tell your Starbucks barista that they gave you decaf when you ordered regular, making waves can be scary. However, one aspect of your life where you shouldn’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone is with your style. I spotted this fearless fashionista walking onto Turlington Plaza. Kristen Kempfert combined a giraffe-print shirt, a statement belt, a custom necklace and a studded skirt perfectly. By making such a bold fashion statement, she was turning heads in the best way possible. I would bet that I wasn’t the only one envious of her outfit! Not only did she totally own this look, but she also shared the secrets behind her style: thrift shopping! Keep on reading to learn more about her style and her love for thrifting.
Name: Kristen Kempfert
Age: 20
Year: junior
Major: plant science
Her Campus: What are you wearing and where is it from?Kristen Kempfert: “My shirt is a long-sleeved giraffe print from H&M. My skirt was actually thrifted. This is $3, and my belt was thrifted for $3. My shoes are also from Goodwill; they’re $7. My aunt made my necklace. She’s a jeweler at Jewelry of Joy out of New Smyrna Beach.”
HC: What are some staples in your closet right now?KK: “Probably this top. I have this other H&M cardigan that’s a really light pink color that I really love. I have so many that I love! I have a belt that’s a turquoise color and it has a gold buckle on it, so I wear that all the time.“
HC: What is your favorite trend currently?KK: “Probably high-waisted anything. High-waisted shorts are another staple of mine!”
HC: If you were to go shopping right now what would you be looking for?KK: “Any sort of patterned tights as we come into fall. They’re always super fun to add to an outfit.”
HC: Do you have any advice for someone thrift shopping in Gainesville?KK: “I would recommend Goodwill as a good starter place, but their prices are more expensive. You’re more likely to find decent stuff there though. The one on 23rd Avenue is really big, and they have some good stuff. Haven Hospice is primarily where I shop for thrifts. It’s never really crowded. Stuff is pretty cheap there, like this belt that was $3 from there.”
