Gainesville isn’t one of the fashion capitals of the world. However, when you come from a city that prides itself on being stylish, you bring a little bit of that to The Swamp with you. Our fashionista of the week, Natasha Jewett, hails from Miami, where she loves to amp up her fashion game. Keep reading to learn more about how Gainesville fashion differs from her hometown’s style.
Name: Natasha Jewett
Age: 19
Year: Freshman
Major: Finance
Her Campus: What are you wearing and where is it from?
Natasha Jewett: “My shoes are from Steve Madden. I guess you could call them espadrilles, and they’re beige and lace up at the ankles. I’m wearing a black or navy blue striped T-Shirt dress from a little boutique in Miami called X-POSE. I’m wearing a golden bar necklace off of Etsy from a private vendor. I’m wearing little bracelets from Pura Vida, which is a Costa Rican bracelet company.”
HC: How would you describe your personal style?
NJ: “I’m very simple, but I do like to dress classy-ish. I don’t want to look like I rolled out of bed, but I don’t want to be on the runway on my way to class either. That’s kind of my style.”
HC: What are some of your favorite items in your closet?
NJ: “Oh, I love T-Shirt dresses. This is my favorite one. I love my black adidas jacket. It’s really in right now. I also love my casual ripped jeans; I like the boyfriend cut. My green bomber jacket is another favorite. I love big fashion jackets.”
HC: Does your style change when you’re at home in Miami?
NJ: “Yes, definitely. Miami is much flashier than Gainesville. You have to wear a lot more jewelry. In Gainesville, I can throw on a T-Shirt dress and sneakers and no one questions you. You actually look nicer than other people around you most of the time if you do that.”
HC: Do you prefer Miami or Gainesville style?
NJ: “It depends on my mood. Some days I feel like dressing up, but some days I roll out of bed and don’t feel like trying to be a model. I just want to wear whatever, and it’s easier to do that in Gainesville.”
HC: Do you have any advice for other Gators?
NJ: “I would say, dress to your own style. Don’t try to impress other people, whether it is in your hometown, which for me is really flashy, or Gainesville. Wear what you want to wear because in reality, no one really remembers what you wear, they just care about what they’re wearing, so wear what you like.”
