The Crafty Gator: Lilly Pulitzer-Inspired Coasters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Do you keep getting upset when your drinks make all of your furniture have nasty, ring water marks everywhere? Well, that was me too, until I made the cutest solution ever!  Here’s how to make adorable coasters for your living space without spending a fortune. They’re also more personalized than a store bought set!

Supplies:

First, you’re going to need to pick out cute, scrapbooking paper. I made these for a friend of mine after she liked the ones I made for myself. I chose to use Lilly Pulitzer patterns because they are bright and fun. You can either use patterns from an old agenda book you have lying around or just search the web for your favorite patterns. If you have an old agenda, use a ruler to cut the square out of the pattern to match the canvas block you bought (usually a 4 inches by 4 inches is the perfect size). Or if you want a specific pattern, copy and paste the image from Google onto a Word Document and resize it to 4 inches by 4 inches. Some images might not be able to fit this square format, so you can just print it out and use a ruler to get the exact dimensions. It helps to look for a square image on Google rather than a large, rectangle version of the pattern that is used for a desktop background.

Next, you’re going to pick a complementary color to spray paint or paint the canvas block. I chose yellow to match the Sailboat and Florida patterns. You should do two coats of paint to make sure everything is evenly covered. Let it dry. Once the canvas squares are dry and the paper is cut out, use mod podge to carefully adhere the paper to the canvas by first painting the top of the canvas and placing the paper on top. Then, you can mod podge over the paper to get that shiny look. The mod podge is what makes the condensation of a cup not cause rings, so I recommend at least 3-5 coats to keep your coasters looking better longer. After it dries, you’re ready to test out your new coasters with a nice glass of sweet tea while watching Grey’s Anatomy!

Happy Crafting!
