Hey Collegiettes!
I hope you all had a fabulous spring break. If you’re like me, though, you probably looked at all the other girls at the beach with envy in your eyes because of their cute bikini bods. I don’t think working hard at the gym is just for pre-spring break! My craft this week will make it easy to take your yoga mat with you to your favorite class at the gym, and now everyone will be looking at you with envy in their eyes because of your cute strap!
Let’s get started! You’re going to need three old t-shirts and a pair of scissors. This is a ridiculously simple craft that will only take you about 20 minutes to do. Plus you’ll be making use of those dingy shirts that are just taking up space in your drawer.
Begin by cutting the bottom hems off of your shirts. You’re not going to need that piece, so go ahead and toss it out. Then cut two one-inch-wide strips from the bottom of the shirt. Don’t worry about cutting perfectly straight. The edges of the strips will curl over and hide any mistakes you make. Once you have all your strips cut, grab your three different colors and tie them together like this:
You’ll also want to tie the strips of the same colors together end-to-end so that you have an extra-long piece to braid. Stick the knot under a chair or hold it between your feet and braid, baby, braid!
Your completed braided cord should look like this. Don’t worry about the little bows sticking out. I think they look pretty cute! Also, at this point you can think about all the other possibilities for braided T-shirt strips. I’m seeing belts, headbands, and decorations for your bedroom. The possibilities are endless!
Next, you’re going to want to get your yoga mat out to figure out how big you need to make your loops at the ends of the cord. Tie the end of your braided cord around the rolled-up mat, and tie a knot. If it’s a little snug, that’s OK because the T-shirt material is pretty stretchy. You won’t have a problem getting it on and off of your mat. Now sling it over your shoulder, and go get your workout on!
XOXO,
The Crafty Gator
P.S. An added bonus of this project is cute cropped tees! I really like this D.A.R.E. one from elementary school — 90s kids, eat your hearts out!
