Summer is quickly approaching, and we are looking for new and creative ways to get up and get active. As we approach “summertime fine” season, our gyms experience a slight influx. Like most Florida girls, we love the water, and it’s basically a life requirement when we enter Florida’s deadly summer heat. Working out in the water is both beneficial and refreshing, so here are five workouts to try to switch up your usual gym routine.
1. Wave Maker
The wave maker is an exercise that requires you to squish your legs together and make a dolphin-like kick. This exercise is great because your legs are working against the water. Your legs should be extended but slightly bent at the knees. Do these wave makers for 30 seconds with big explosive blasts. This workout targets your back, abs, butt and legs.
2. Ball Lever
The ball lever is an exercise that requires you to balance your body on an inflatable ball. Your arms should be extended straight down, holding on to the ball with the rest of your body afloat. This exercise should be held for 30-second intervals.
3. Wave Jumping
This exercise requires you to squat in waist-deep water and attempt to jump over the waves you create. Variations to the workout include jumping forward, backward, sideways and scissoring your legs. This exercise targets your thighs and butt.
4. Deep Water Jogging
Water jogging is a great calorie-burning exercise, as it burns 750 calories per hour. In this exercise, you hold on to a flotation device (like a noodle) and “run” very fast, lifting your knees high. Sets should last anywhere between 30 and 60 seconds. This is a great cardiovascular exercise, and your heart will be pumping after this workout.
5. Surf Strolling
Here’s one for the beach, ladies! Just taking a stroll along the beach can turn into a lower muscle body workout. Walking in thigh-deep waves holds the biggest burns, and even lower water levels can still keep you toned.
Beat the upcoming summer heat by splashing around in the pool, all while creating a toned body with these fun exercises. In no time, you’ll be ready to show off your new muscles when you hit the pool and beach all summer long.
