Gilmore Girls fans, if you haven’t heard yet, our beloved show is now available on Netflix! But I’m sure you already knew that. What I didn’t realize until I started re-watching clips of this oh-so relatable show is beyond its witty lines and heart-touching moments between mother and daughter was the equally amazing fashionable moments. These are the top five fashion moments from the show in no particular order and what you should take away from them to inspire your own looks.
1. Rory’s DIY dressThis drama-filled episode centered on the Chilton formal and had many highlights, especially when Rory stole the spotlight with the beautiful dress Lorelai made. Even Emily can’t believe the dress was not store bought because it looked so nice. It goes to show some of the best pieces don’t have to be expensive or designer to look just as good, if not better. Save your money, and if you know your way around a sewing machine or even super glue, let your creativity design your next outfit or accessory.
2. Lorelai and Rory channel the ‘40sEven if Lorelai and Rory end up losing Star Hollow’s annual 24-hour dance marathon to Kirk, they sure weren’t losing in the style department. Both mother and daughter looked stunning in their ’40s getups. If you’re bored with your usual outfits, don’t be afraid to take some inspiration from another era and mix a vintage piece into your more modern outfit. Oh, and don’t ever go out in heels without having a backup pair of flats!
3. Luke anytime he’s at the dinerThis isn’t so much just one moment as it is multiple moments throughout the seven seasons of Gilmore Girls where we got to see Luke in his natural habitat. The flannel shirts and baseball cap always seemed to suit Lorelai’s on-and-off love interest. The moment he strayed from his iconic look, it always threw me off. So, take it from Luke and find that one iconic piece that suits you, and make it all your own — something to be remembered for.
4. Sookie when she’s on the jobJust like Luke, Sookie had multiple style moments, especially within the kitchens of the Independence Inn and later at the Dragonfly Inn as executive chef. Her collection of various chef coats and matching headscarves prove your work wardrobe doesn’t have to be boring. Some of us will soon be entering the real world, where dressing professionally will become a requirement. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring in a little color or sparkle here and there to bring out some of your personality while at the office or anywhere else for that matter.
5. The Birkin BagAny fashion lover probably couldn’t help but internally scream when Rory called Logan’s gift (a pink Hermès Birkin Bag) just a “purse.” Even Emily let out an “OMG” when told about the generous gift given to her granddaughter later in the episode. Still, there was something so charming about Rory’s ignorance towards the gift that you couldn’t help but love her anyway. One thing we can take away from this is sometimes it’s worth investing in good, quality pieces that will last you many wears to come. Also, sometimes it’s okay to spoil yourself on a more expensive piece, if money allows.
Even after the last episode aired more than seven years ago, the characters of Gilmore Girls still have many lessons to teach us — even in the fashion department. The next time you decide to bundle up with your Netflix account for a Gilmore Girls marathon, take some notes for your own personal style. Keep looking good, collegiettes!
