How to Pretend it’s Summer in the Middle of Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Winter is the worst. Besides a handful of crazies, I think almost everyone can agree that the summer is infinitely better. From warm, sunny days to hot pink bikinis, there’s no doubt that summer is absolute perfection, especially in Florida. What better way to beat the winter blues than by pretending it’s summer? Here are some easy ways to pretend you’re tanning on the beach with a coconut in hand rather than shivering in your winter coat and beanie.

1. NailsSomething as simple as the color of your nail polish can change your mood regardless of the season. Winter months are generally associated with darker colors like red, navy or maroon. But I say, who cares? Swipe on a coat of hot pink or orange nail polish to brighten up these wintery months.

2. Traditional summer foodsWinter makes us want to cook cozy foods like chili. How about breaking tradition and cooking some summer classics? Hotdogs, watermelon and corn are simple enough. If you are feeling really adventurous and are willing to face the cold, break out your grill and make some kebabs. All these foods will have you and your stomach tricked into thinking it’s summertime.

3. TanningA little tan can change your entire perspective. If the weather permits, head down to your apartment complex’s pool. Or better yet, catch some rays along the banks of Lake Wauburg. If you just can’t bear the chilly winds, then spray tanning is always an excellent option to give you that warm summer glow. Just don’t end up looking like you belong on the Jersey Shore.

4. Sunscreen perfumeI’m almost kidding and almost serious with this one. The smell of sunscreen is bound to make you reminisce back to last summer’s Fourth of July blowout. It is also very good at protecting your skin even in the colder winter months! Just don’t get too stinky or you will get a few strange looks in that two-hour biology block.

5. Wear bright colorsForget about wearing dreary old black and start to dress every day like you’re about to party like it’s 1985! The brighter, the better! However, bright doesn’t have to be obnoxious. Break out your cute white pullover sweater. This is simple enough to accessorize with your neon Nikes or a hot pink scarf.

6. Summer-themed partyThrow a party at your place with your best girl friends. Make a playlist including Katy Perry’s “California Girls” and Pharrell’s “Happy.” Crank up the heater to set the mood. As your lovely guests enter, hand each of them a flowered Hawaiian lei necklace. Break out your blender and treat your girls to pina coladas. Finally, finish the night with some of the ultimate summer movies like Jaws, The Sandlot and American Pie.

So next time you’re feeling that summertime sadness, try out some of these fun ideas. You’ll be sure to forget your winter blues in no time. Before you know it, we’ll be back to the sunshine and swimsuit-filled months of summer.
