Tips on how to deal with this difficult time

Going through a breakup can be really hard. Almost everyone has gone through one, or will go through one, but how do you deal with it? I went through a breakup over the summer, and for months I let it distract me from my school, work and friends. But I learned from my mistakes and here is my best advice for getting over a breakup.

1. No Contact

It’s easy to want to talk to your ex the next day, but you have to stay strong. The best way to get over a breakup is to go no contact or else it’s going to continue to drag on, and then you’ll be stuck in this weird situationship. If your ex tries to contact you down the road (trust, they always try to come back) do your best to ignore it.

2. Hang Out with Friends

Sometimes when you’re in a relationship, your friendships can suffer. You’re spending more time with your partner and don’t really have enough time to hang out with your friends like you used to. After your split, it’s essential to lean on those who care about you and get support from them. Start spending more time with your friends and soon enough you won’t even remember your breakup at all!

3. Journal

Writing down your feelings can be beneficial in processing your emotions. Keeping a written document can help you remember why the relationship did not work out in the first place, and it can help you see patterns or traits that you didn’t like in the relationship. This just means you visually see, through your journal, what characteristics you want and don’t want in your next relationship. Also, just writing everything out is a great way to vent and clear your head during a confusing time like this.

4. Get a Hobby

When most people go through a breakup, they flock to the gym. This is a great distraction and can help improve your physical and mental health. Exercise can reduce anxiety and improve self-confidence. Trust me, once you start going to the gym, you’ll never want to stop. But there are a ton of other hobbies you can pick up such as reading, writing, joining a sports team or even learning a new language. It’s important to just pick a hobby that you will stick with, because it will help improve your mindset.

5. Stay off Social Media

When curiosity hits, you immediately want to go check your ex’s social media to see how they are doing. This is one of the worst things you can possibly do. It is so easy nowadays to know exactly what someone is doing at any given time, but you need to refrain. Unfollowing or blocking your ex is the best thing you can do after a breakup, which relates back to my rule of having no contact. If you continue to check up on them through Instagram or Snapchat, you will ultimately end up hurt by something you see. Out of sight, out of mind.

6. Focus on School

The best revenge is success. Start focusing more on school and your goals for your future career. You’ll feel so much better when you start making straight A’s and land that internship you applied for. You will be so happy with getting good grades and advancing your school career that you won’t even have time to think about your breakup. Plus, your ex will see that you’re doing better without them!

7. Therapy

We all know the benefits of therapy. Going to therapy can help you better understand yourself and your behaviors, as well as the behaviors of people around you. Sometimes it is best to talk to a professional that can help you with all the different emotions you can experience during a breakup. They can also give you recommendations on how to cope with those feelings and how to feel better during this hard time.

Breakups are never fun, but it is important to pick yourself back up after one. Focus on things that will make you happy and improve yourself so you have more confidence. And just remember that you’ll eventually get through it with the help of your friends and family.
