When I first moved to the city, I didn’t really know what to expect. In my mind, I was going to be living just like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City: living in Manhattan, being fashion forward and finding myself a few new besties. Man, was I wrong! While the city does have its magical moments, there are definitely lots of downsides that took some getting used to. Here are the struggles of adjusting to New York City as told by our fave characters from Sex and the City.
1. When you learn a million things on the first day of your job
Being qualified for the job doesn’t necessarily mean you know what you’re doing at first!
2. When you ask a ton of questions about how to get around on the subway
You know where you’re going thanks to Google Maps, but you still have to triple check by asking everyone around you.
3. When you have to balance your job, school and just about everything in between
Work overload is a thing, my friends — but totally doable when you organize yourself!
4. When you get splashed with street water by a bus (true story)
You know, the one thing you thought only happened in movies, actually happened to me in real life. (NBD.)
5. When you spend your entire day on a computer
Being a digital production intern means that you spend your 9-5 frying your eyes (and brain).
6. When you’re too busy to do laundry
Just re-wear those slacks. No one will notice.
7. When you accidentally take the wrong subway and end up miles from home
And you blame Google Maps, the person that told you you were going the right way — and just about anyone but yourself.
8. When you have to wear something other than gym clothes everyday
The ultimate struggle.
9. When you realize how expensive everything is here
Maybe I can afford the simple necessities of life if I’d stop prioritizing weekend brunches…
10. When you unnecessarily buy coffee every morning because #adulting
Your co-worker got coffee this morning? Sure, I’ll get some too!
11. When you actually start getting the hang of things
No longer getting lost on the subway and speed walking on the sidewalks is now the new norm.
12. When you get to know yourself like you never have before
Being alone in the city is the ultimate test of who you are and what you want to accomplish.
Adjusting is never a fun task, but once you’ve got it all figured out, New York City is pretty amazing. Until next time!
