The season’s hottest hair accessory is more than just a headband. It adds vintage flair to any hairstyle and can fix a bad hair day instantly. Kim Kardashian may have put the trend on everyone’s radar, but she definitely was not the first one to be spotted wearing it.
For all my “Gossip Girl” followers, remember the epic season two finale when Chuck finally said, “I love you” to Blair? Well, Blair was wearing a gold Jennifer Behr sailor knot headband. And that was almost two years ago. But no need to go down Memory Lane to prove that this is hot. Not only is this new trend a nautical wonder, but it’s also cheap! You can easily make one for yourself. Orange and blue anyone?

If you can’t find colors that you really like, or you just want to make your own, follow these steps:
What You’ll Need:
- 4, 1-yard rope strands
- ½ yard of 1-inch wide twill
- Hairband
- Sewing needle
- Thread
Directions:
- Make a sailor knot with the first two strands of rope. For help, click here: http://www.tollesburysc.co.uk/knots/carrick_bend.htm
- Take your other two strands and snake them side-by-side so that each side of the knot is doubled.
- Slowly pull the strands in opposite directions making the knot tighter. Make sure to keep the strands even and the knot flat.
- Flip the headband over so that the flat side of the knot is facing up. Take your needle and thread and sew together the four strands of rope about 1 inch away from the knot. This keeps the strands flat on the back.
- Repeat on the other end of the piece.
- Trim your ropes, making all of the ends even. The whole piece should now be approximately 19 inches long. In order for the knot to lay on the side of your head, the knot should be at the 7 ½ inch mark.
- Cut two pieces of twill 3 inches in length.
- Use your thread and needle and sew the ropes on both ends flat.
- On the side closer to the knot and on the front of the headband (the flat side of the knot should be facing down), line the edge of the twill with the end of the rope and sew with your needle and thread at 1 inch from the edge.
- Fold the twill down over the stich line and flip the headband over so that the back of the headband is facing you. Place the headband inside of the twill.
- Fold the twill at about ¼ inch.
- Now fold up so that the folded twill tape covers the stich line.
- Sew this edge down as well.
- Repeat steps 9 through 13 again on the longer side of the headband.
