For many students it takes time to adjust to the college lifestyle. It’s hard being in a new town while learning how to juggle classes, make new friends and be on your own without your family helping you along the way. Without anticipating it, one of the hardest goodbyes to make is not even to a person at all, but to that fluffy fur ball that’s been by your side since you can remember: your dog. Throughout time dogs have always had a special place in our hearts and you can see how much students love their cute companions at the University of Florida. No matter where you go on campus you will eventually come across a UF student walking their dog, playing Frisbee, or running around with their pup on Flavet Field. So the question is why are college students so obsessed with their dogs? Because dogs will be your best friend no matter what. Dogs are known to give unconditional love and attention to their humans. This improves a person’s life because it will make a person feel joy and safety. Dogs also decrease the feeling of loneliness, which is a common feeling that most college students experience during their time getting an education. If you are feeling down and in need of a sweet puppy to love, the Alachua Humane Society has adoption hours Thursday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and they are always looking for volunteers! Check out the puppy-filled video we made there.
The Alachua County Humane Society is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on volunteers in order to rescue as many animals as possible. They are always looking for volunteers that are passionate about helping animals that are in need of a good home. There are so many dogs at the animal shelter that could use some love and play time so if you are at all interested in adopting or helping out at the shelter I would highly recommend applying to be a volunteer. I can say from personal experience when I visited the Alachua Humane Society I was blown away by all the adoptable dogs. Each dog had a unique personality and gave tons of affection. It amazes me how much love these dogs can give even after all the obstacles they had to face. Dogs are truly selfless creatures and we as people are so lucky to call dogs our best friends.
