“Maybe our girlfriends are our soul mates and guys are just people to have fun with.” –Sex and the City
One of my top five absolute favorite quotes of all time. I’m blessed to have a lot of best friends in my life. My oldest best friend is my partner in crime — always willing to go anywhere with me, and we may or may not have a shopping problem. I don’t completely mind.
I have one I can call for sushi, one I can call to complain about boys, one I can call when I’m walking to class, one I can call when I want to dance to Spanish music — I’m blessed. Most of them even have awkward nicknames — boo boo, nerd, pookie, chubby bunny, pana, lover, sister, roomz, Person.
I have two roommates who are, seriously, the light of my lives. Sometimes I swear I’m dating them because I must hear everything about their days, and I want to hangout with them even though I already live with them, and, well, I love them.
I’m still growing up and learning so many things, but I can always count on these two for support. Whether that’s letting me tear apart their closets for the perfect shirt or the perfect skirt, or buying St. Patrick’s Day cookies for the apartment. When I go on Facebook and see something upsetting about my ex the other day, I climbed into one of their beds at 2 a.m. They patiently listened and told me all the right things.
Last week I saw my ex with another girl. I can’t even lie — it sucked. Of course I felt instantly better when one of my roommates sent me a motivational Facebook message for me to read the next day: she had already talked to me in person about it, but it was a lovely surprise seeing the red number one pop up on my homepage. She had sent me relevant song lyrics as well. (Listen to it: Till I Get There by Lupe Fiasco).
I remember a few years back when I had broken up with a boyfriend, she surprised me with a BASKET of my favorite stuff: Cosmopolitan magazine, white cheddar popcorn, Double-stuffed Oreos, everything! Just as a pick-me-up. You probably have someone in mind right now who you know has done or would do the same for you. Maybe you’ve done it yourself for someone.
The point is, collegiettes
, that not all guys are Prince Charming from the beginning. Will you find him some day? Yes. Until then, soak in every minute possible with your girlfriends. Not only that, be a best friend to them as well. We’re in college — we have the ability to live, party, eat, workout, tan, wander, shop, laugh, cook and do just about anything with these girls. Have a slumber party. Bake too many cookies. This is the time of our lives, and I know for a fact there is no one I would rather spend it with than my girls.
Xoxo,
