Super Stylist: Looking Interview-Ready

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

The dictionary definition of stylization is “to give a conventional or established stylistic form.” If you switch that Z with an S, you get my name – Lisa – and I’m your style guru.

Want quick and easy tips for any situation? Whether it’s a romantic date, a night on the town, an important interview, or an average day, StyLISAtion will give you the simple styling details you need to look put together for whatever comes your way!

You’re in college… Odds are that at some point, you will have an important interview. In fact, odds are that you will have several important interviews. There are many things that go into preparing for an interview, but one thing sometimes gets overlooked: being dressed to impress with a fresh-faced, professional look.

Whenever I think “interview,” I automatically think “black suit and white button down, slicked back bun and minimal makeup.” However, there is a way to look interview-ready while still keeping it trendy and cute.

In order to show you my idea of a professional look, I decided to demonstrate on one of my friends. Readers, meet Arianna!

First, let’s start with interview-appropriate hairstyles. The most important thing is to have your hair how you feel looks the best, so you are the most comfortable. I usually tend to stick to low ponytails with some volume, or a pinned back look. Anything that keeps your hair out of your face works. For my most recent interview, I went with a half-up, pinned back look. I feel like I look my best with my hair down, so this was the most comfortable style for me.

What’s easy about this style is that it works for any hair type or texture. Arianna’s hair is naturally straight, so I just ran a straightener though it to smooth it down. I made a side part and then took two pieces from the front and secured them with bobby pins in the back. I wanted to keep the look trendy by making the side with more hair sweep across her forehead, rather than just going straight back. Once the hair was secured, I lightly hair sprayed it, and voilà! A ‘do suited for an interview.

Besides acing the interview itself, it’s important to get your makeup right. You want to represent yourself in the best way possible. I suggest wearing natural tones to accentuate your eyes and lips in a subtle way. Caked on makeup and smoky eyes don’t look professional! These natural tones that I used on Arianna say, “I’m ready for the job!”

For Arianna’s lids, I used an Ulta eye shadow “Trendsetter.” http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3570089#sku2231947 I used this color because it was a neutral tone that had some sparkle and dimension to it.

To get Arianna’s look, use an eye shadow brush to apply this shade to your entire lid and about halfway up to your eyebrow. Just under your brow, apply a light cream color eye shadow, such as Ulta’s “Iceland.”  http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3570089#sku2231895 This creates a nice highlight under your brow and adds dimension to your look.

Use a dark brown shadow, such as Ulta’s “Mesmerize,” http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3570089#sku2231901 to accentuate the crease of your lid by brushing on a thin line.

Once your shadow is applied, you’re almost ready to impress your interviewers! In order to complete your look, apply a small amount of brown eyeliner to your upper and lower lids, as well as some mascara to make your eyes pop. On Arianna, I used Maybelline “Line Stylist” eyeliner http://www.maybelline.com/products/20/eyes/eye-liner/line-stylist-eyeliner/espresso/602?shadeId=128&view=shades&position=475 in Espresso and Maybelline “Lash Stiletto” mascara in Very Black http://www.maybelline.com/products/65/eyes/mascara/lash-stiletto-voluptuous-washable-mascara/very-black/000001?shadeId=346

Finally, put a bit of lip tint on your lips, such as Burt’s Bees Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil (http://www.burtsbees.com/natural-products/lips-lip-balms/replenishing-lip-balm-pomegranate-oil.html

To tie this professional look together, try wearing simple but trendy accessories, like pearls or pendant earrings.

Now that you look pulled together, fresh-faced and professional, you’ll have the confidence to ace any interview! Good luck, girl.
