Thanksgiving with the “Gilmore Girls”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

I don’t know which I’m more excited for: the return of Gilmore Girls, or Thanksgiving. Both bring me joy, entertainment, and make me plenty hungry. Sometimes Thanksgiving dinners at my house can feel like Friday night dinners at the Gilmore house; oddly proper, too much small talk (or not enough, there’s really no in-between,) and never going quite as planned. Despite the madness of these family dinners, Thanksgiving is still my favorite holiday (probably just because of the food and amusement). So here’s my version of Thanksgiving as told by my two favorite girls.

First, there’s the disapproval from my mom when she sees my room. Which I still don’t understand why it needs to be clean when no one is coming in here?!

Then comes the melt down in the kitchen from the stress of cooking, cleaning, setting the table and trying to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade all at the same time.

At this point, everyone has started to arrive. Of course the relatives you don’t like get there first.

Then come the cousins you actually wait all year to see, and you’re just like, “Thank God” because things were getting awkward.

Now it’s finally time to sit down and start eating — my favorite! My grandmother is already commenting on how much I’m putting on my plate, and do I really need mashed potatoes and a biscuit?

At which point I turn to sit at the opposite side of the table because I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life.

Once we’re all seated, the real show begins. First there’s that one great aunt that is very old-fashioned and says racist, misogynistic things that make you proud to be a millennial. Cue the eye rolling.

Then someone brings up politics, and you just sit back as you wait for the storm that will explode to pass.

And how could you forget when your grandmother starts talking about her first sexual experience? Not in front of the food, grandma!

How much more horrifying can this get!?

Finally, it’s time for pie! This should fix the evening. I mean, pie fixes everything, right?

And don’t forget, it’s always a good rule of thumb to always have extra ice!

Happy Thanksgiving and happy “Gilmore Girls” reunion to all my fellow fans! May you smile as bright as Lorelai when she sees a fresh pot of coffee, and have enough room for food as Rory does for books.
